This could only be a Fribourg and Treyer snuff, I just can't imagine anyone else making it. The flavour and duration of it have been expertly described here and I don't have too much to add in that respect. What I will say is that this is one of a handful of snuffs that for me entirely represent the long and elegant history of snuff taking. We all know there are some outstnding modern snuffs out there (where would my collection be without Toque?) but this snuff just drips class. I have some pre-Wilsons Macouba, by the way, and I can say that it has been faithfully re-produced as well (and if you want to know how you can tell if it's pre WoS, the original FandT cans have the old London telephone number of the shop in tiny letters on the side)

Macouba is a genuine snuff of history. The name derives from a canton or commune on the French island of Martinique in the Caribbean. A little internet research shows that this is a style of snuff that has been around for a centuries. There seem to be a lot of variants in spelling of the word in historical texts, which is to be expected considering literacy rates of the day and linguistic differences. The variant spellings have included: macabaa, macauba, macuba, maccouba, macaboo, maccaboy and maccoboy. It seems to have originated on Martinique and is generally agreed upon to be a fine dark brown snuff, usually rose scented.
Fribourg & Treyer, of course, make everything "gourmet" so this is more than what would have been an everyday snuff in days of old. A published snuff list states that this also includes sandalwood, geranium, bourbon, tonquin and musk. These scents blend in very nicely, but the rose still takes the driver's seat. There is a nice initial burn when taken and then the scent lingers pleasantly for some time. The nicotine also hits, settles down and then blossoms anew. Floral scents are not for everyone, but this is truly one of the best representions of the style anywhere. I find a snuff like this is best enjoyed while relaxing on late evenings, perhaps with a nice single malt whisky.

A strong, perfumed citrus/floral flavour is the first impression I get from this one. The other, darker scents show up later in the course. Nose burn is only very slightly there. A bit finer ground and drier than the average F&T. This is a high class offering, undisputed. But who wants to have such a heavy perfume in its nose all day? It´s great on occasion and stays for quite some time, delightfully. But not all day, it´s just too heavy for that.

This snuff has been described as having several flower flavorings but the first thing I think of when I snuff it is a lemon citrus type flavor. The flavor lasts a long time so less of it is needed. It doesn't seem to be particularly high in nicotine to me. Once again I must mention those nice F&T containers that keep the snuff fresh for a LONG time. Try this one as a change of pace. 4 stars.

Sandy hit the nail on the head - this is indeed a very special snuff. Rich and flowery, with a warm, spicy undertone - almost like Kendal Brown had a love-child with a schmaltzer. Utterly delicious, and (perhaps courtesy of the fine grind - this is the finest non-toast I've yet experienced) the scent lingers for ages. There's a very nice burn - it doesn't have you reaching for the McChrystals like a Rooster would, but you definitely feel it in your hooter. As far as the big N goes, it's a little tricky - I suspect this is merely average in nicotine, but the fine grind results in a greater amout of snuff in the average pinch, and the burn of the musk (or is it the tonquin?) probably causes a bit of a Pavlovian reaction in regular snuff-takers. So "high" it is. Everything about this snuff screams "luxury" - truly the snuff of royalty. It's a snuff I have to put way in the back of the snuff drawer, just so I don't end up using it all up in one sitting.
This was the first Fribourg & Treyer I had the pleasure of trying, and I have yet to find a better F&T offering - the Bordeaux and Morocco (both from F&T) are both fine snuffs in their own right, but they pale in comparision to this. I would be hard-pressed to find a better offering from anyone, period. It's a bit pricey (on a per-unit basis - keep in mind that F&T tins are a little more than twice as big as the average 10g Wilsons), but worth every last penny. If you don't mind flowers, then there's absolutely no reason why you shouldn't give this delectable offering a shot.

Medium brown, medium grind and medium moisture, with some initial nose burn. A really special snuff, scented with roses, sandlewood, geranium, some citrus, musk and tonka beans, and maybe some violet. The roses dominate at first, followed by the sandlewood, musk and floral scents which lingers very pleasantly. The grind, tobacco and aromas can't be faulted - there is perfect balance. Nicotine levels are quite low, which seems to be a characteristic of F&T snuffs. For such a full flavoured, complex snuff, it is surprisingly moreish! 9 or 10/10.

Distinguishably F&T, it is a nicely fragrant floral with rose at the main stage. It has a moderate nose burn and it is easy to take. It has a lasting flavor. I enjoy this snuff, but I do not find it very memorable among other F&Ts. I recommend this snuff to those who like florals.

They used to advertise this as being scented with pure Bulgarian attar of roses. They didn't mention anything else that I can recall. Whatever, they now mention many other things, but it does retain its rose scent, with a bit more sparkle and a touch of burn. I find that I like it, and that it is more pleasing to me that it was before. (I used to mix it half and half with an anise flavored snuff from Dean Swift.) The scent is strong, and it stays with me for a good while, but it isn't offensively perfumed (to me, at least). I like the texture, and I like the way it handles. It does dry in the box, but it doesn't lose its scent so quickly as many, which is good. Historically, it has been suggested that Dickens made the name of Mr. Micawber out of the name of Macouba snuff, which is not at all unlikely, given the popularity of this snuff at the time of Charles Dickens.

Sandalwood, rose, musk, geranium, bourbon and tonquin are the flavourings quoted for Macouba. The sandalwood is muted, allowing the rose and geranium to come through more strongly though the rose is not as strong as in other snuffs of this type (Railroad Mills Maccoboy for instance). While not my favourite F&T snuff this is still one that I like to have on hand.

Man, this is some God awful stuff. It's certainly not a cheap snuff and the quality is obvious as all F&T's I've sampled. The flavor though is perfume to the extreme and not one I particularly care for. This is about the longest lasting of any snuff I've tried and nothing short of steel wool has been effective at removing it. I can comfortably say that I'll probably be able to pass this tin on to my yet to be born grandson and with a good portion left. I can't imagine doing that to a loved one though.... The very qualities it possesses though; long lasting and intense flavor, prove it to be a quality snuff, just one I don't care for with extreme prejudice. Despite my lack of enthusiasm, it does deserve pretty high marks as a quality product, hence; 3 begrudging stars.
