Previous encounters with the new F&T snuffs by Wilsons have been rather disheartening. Everyone knows that the original Santo Domingo - listed in the old Guinness Book of Records as one of the world’s most expensive snuffs - contained tobacco from Cuba instead of Zimbabwe. This offering should therefore be another disappointment. Actually this is very close to the original with that distinctive F&T tarry 'London' tobacco taste, which is complemented by the delicate scent of violet instead of the intense floral reek that mars some of the others. Immediately upon opening the tin a certain olfactory memory, dormant for more than thirty years, was reawakened and transported back in time. Others have expressed praise for this snuff in words beyond my literary abilities. I’ll just add that I believe this is the best of the recreated F&T range with Princes in second place. Well done Wilsons & Co.

This is very similar in appearance to the Princes Special, but with no identifiable floral component, and a much more pronounced earthy, heavy, dark wood quality. I would defer to Xander's extraordinarily perceptive and subtle analysis below of the various strands that make up this incredible snuff; to me, it's simply the best dark, moist snuff I've ever had. Peat, tilled earth, stone, clay, old wood, heavy, moist air, rich fragrant tobacco and lush vegetation are all called to mind by this infinitely deep and complex blend. A very low burn, and very rich and satisfying in the nose, one wants to resist the blow for as long as possible with this. The scent is very long lived but never overwhelming, and seems to linger and change for a considerably longer time than most snuffs. A very special achievment.

A moist, course, black snuff. It seems to be a similar base to the Princes, but with an altogether different scenting.
A published list shows this snuff to contain cedar oil, sandalwood oil and absolute violet, but the foremost scent really is the smokey-wood character. Wood scent is very much prominent. To distinguish the individual scents has taken me a lot of practice. I've had this snuff a year now, and only in the last few months have I started to understand and appreciate it. The various scents are usually working as part of a chorus or behind the scent of the tobacco. Every now and then, one of them shines through solo for a moment and then retreats back into the chorus. Absolute Violet, I have learned is not the extract of violet flowers, but of violet leaves. So this is not going to remind you of your favorite violet or floral snuff. This is a more grassy-earthy note.
I learned what sandalwood scent was from some more obnoxious sandalwood snuffs. Here, I can detect it, but it is as it should be: subdued and working in harmony with other scents.
The cedar scent, of course, is well known to anyone who had a cedar chest, wardrobe, or kept a pet rodent. Cedar is a clean and pleasant scent.
Due to the nature of the grind, I find a small snuff spoon to be invaluable in taking this snuff. Pinching it tends to clump it too much and the F&T tubes are hard to pinch from anyway. It makes my nose run quite a bit, but is very long lasting in scent. Multiple spoonfuls are easy to take because its moist and gentle.
Easy enough for a beginner to use, but will delight the expert who relishes subtlety and good straight tobacco.

Almost black, coarse and very moist, this snuff is the most enjoyable coarse, moist snuff I know of. Perhaps my nose is jaded at the moment, but I don't pick up much sandlewood, cedar, violet or geranium. There is a faint woody, floral hint somewhere in there, but it is masked by a magnificant leathery, peaty, moist and rich tobacco flavour that makes this one stand out from the crowd. Some nose burn, but the moistness makes it very easy to take in large quantities (without the unpleasant throat drip of many schmalzers). Nicotine is delivered slowly and evenly over a long period of time. Ideal with an Islay whisky late at night. 10/10.

Thought this would be a Kendal Brown at the first moment, as it higly resembles that in appearance. The dark flavouring supports this thought as well. I find the floral tone (Violet) very present, wasn´t too sure about the other strong flavour being sandalwood, which it indeed is. It´s either very sparsely used or a natural one and I presume the latter. It isn´t especially "heavy" as the sandalwood used by some competitors. Although the grind and moisture would suggest this can´t be sniffed from the back of the hand, it works just perfect and is indeed easier, than to pinch it. Burn is minimal, duration very long. A tip on the nose and it´s back again in full strength. A very male flavour for my tastes and I wouldn´t mind wearing a perfume with that scent, if I was into such a thing. But why share, when you can have it all for your own plus the nicotine (which is moderately there)?

I will agree with Spyro, below. This snuff is a very decent black rapee, but the flavours are not particularly amazing. Slightly smokey tobacco with a very mild and somewhat indeterminable floral background. Other reviewers have rated this snuff very highly, however, which leads me to believe that either I do not have a particularly refined nose, or that, equally likely, batches differ.

I ordered some of this in high anticipation based upon the reviews. However, I have to admit I was slighltly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent snuff with some high quality, its just not what I was expecting. The flavor is very subtle and mostly comes across with the smoked tobacco being foremost. It was more coarse than I had expected and takes some effort to hold in one's nostrils (much in par with a coarse Schmalzler such as Klostermischung). This is offset by the extreme moisture content which actually clogged my Packard's box which I usually use to port my tinned or canned snuffs around.
However, it doesn't clog the nose and begs to be cleared frequently. The base flavor I get is that of a leathery earth tone. There is a very slight hint of cedar and floral essense but its rather hard to pick up without the imagination or a humid environment. This blend reminded me of a Kendal Brown taken to a somewhat higher level. The flavor is there and might delight those seeking a more natural and earthy shade. I like this snuff enough to finish off what I have but be sure and read the reviews carefully, as this snuff is subtle and not the sandalwood/cedar experience some users may be hoping for.
With all that said, this is a fine blend that will appeal to those who like earthy and natural snuffs without too much hassle. It is very moist and hard to keep in the nose so a good snuff spoon or pocket knife or hardy back of the hand method may be needed. For those seeking a deeper floral or herbal experience I'd suggest looking elsewhere. This is a hardy blend that delivers to the more discriminate of natural or subtle flavor appreciations. I'm glad I purchased a tin but it simply was not what I was expecting. Might make for a good mixer for some of the dry American Scotches IMHO.

Being an Arizona boy, and given the name of this one.....reared on Tacos, chili, and silent desert nights, I just had to try this one........Opening the package once the mail came, my first thought was ........GOOD GOD, WHAT THE HELL DIED AND WHO LOST THEIR DIRTY SOCKS".......but I unscrewed the jar like a true warrior and took a pinch ........and thats when this concoction transformed, took root, and went to work.......CEDAR......Dark cedar.....woodys cedar.....Leather.....maybe even a sweaty horse........rounded out with sandalwood soon after.........smooth and plain.....THEN.....a about a minute later .......violets.....finishing up the sensation...the violets ride high in your nose ......lacing the whole experience.....while the ceder continues to dominate the moment........the scent lasts for some time too....like 45 minutes or so.....I take this one for the scent...not the nicotine...which is around medium........It's always in my bag when I go to the mountains or the desert hunting ........sometimes I just come home and take a sniff to escape.....it's not an all day snuff by any means ....or even an everyday snuff...but I LOVE IT.........it's special, deep, old, and respectable......

Magnificent. This is an earthy and woodsy snuff. It is earthy like the stimulating smell of a rich soil that comes alive with the rain. It is woodsy like a fine aged wood that refuses to dry and gives a respectful character to the object that it forms. This snuff is relaxing and inspiring. I highly recommend it.

Be very quiet and you'll hear monks singing. Nothing scary of course.
Take a deep breath and continue your hike.

This is a wonderful snuff! A lovely woodland-y flavour from the cedar and sandalwood, followed by (to me) a faint trace of violets, finishing up with a tangy, smoky, slightly salty aftertaste from the dark fired tobacco base. this used to be made with Cuban tobacco but now I believe Zimbabwean tobacco is used instead. Lots of length to the flavour too; if you rub your nose after a few minutes - there it is again!
Medium coarse ground and quite moist, with a tendency to clump if pinched, I find it's better to use a spoon or fill a bullet and tap it onto the back of your hand and sniff from there.
Fribourg & Treyer have a reputation for world class snuffs and I can't disagree - I could snuff this all day.
Highly recommended.

Way back when, Fribourg & Treyer advertised that Santo Domingo (note the different spelling) was made from the finest Cuban tobacco and scented with violets from Grasse in Switzerland. I was most anxious to try it, but of course one was not allowed to import it. I had to go to great extremes to get some.
I've been away from snuff for a while (working the wrong times and places) but I just got a new tin, and am trying to find an old one, to make comparisons. I am finding it pleasing... I don't find any of the modern scents to overpower any of the others, and it has a distinctive flavour.
But I will wrote more if I can find that old tin!

I thought I was going to end up throwing this away! I now enjoy SD once in a while, though I cannot imagine taking it regularly. If one were to cremate one's granny and be tempted.. I rather suspect it would taste like Santo Domingo. Being very new to this I find it a fascinating flavour that conjures up lots of exotic aromas - even a bit "mysterious" as an earlier reviewer said.

I really enjoy this one, has a dark smokey almost myserious quality to it, I can definitely detect the sandalwood, as it seem to be on top. Other reviewers have stated the other scents are cedar and violet. They blend together very well and it is a satisfying experience. A bit too moist, can gum together when pinching so a snuff spoon would perhaps be preferrable. A very nice occasional snuff with a long lasting scent. This is one that is sure to intrigue your non-snuffing friends.

Very dark, medium moist, course fired leaf tobacco with a delicate scent. Between sandalwood, cedar and violet none overpower the other making for an intriguing perfume. I detect a little saltiness also. Very easy to snuff loads due to it's dampness though hard to keep a little from dropping out the nose. Nice nic and very mild tobacco fragrance. I am now compelled to try all of the Fribourg & Treyor recipes.

Not one of my favorites but one I might pick up once a month or so. Definitely a gritty snuff with a lot of glitter. I can only enjoy this one in small pinches.

Santo Domingo is a snuff I have changed my opinion of over time. I used to find it too coarse and rather gritty (but with good flavouring). Now I find it simply delightful. It has a good, solid tobacco base, slightly smoky and very tasty, which isn't overpowered by the sandalwood, cedar and violet flavouring. I find the cedar imparts a freshness which lifts this snuff from the ordinary to the excellent.

My second favorite all time snuff. Used half of a large tin in the first day I had it. It is a course moist snuff more so then any other snuff I have tried. Though it does not gum up my nose. When sniffed it is very palpable in the nose. The tobacco is very rich and cigar like the scents of cedar sandalwood and geranium can sometimes hide in this snuff but are wonderfully blended. It reminds me of freshly tanned leather but sweeter and more floral. Although I find this to be the most delcious snuff ever developed it seems that for some people only the smokey dark tobacoo scent comes out and seems like cigeratte butts. Definatly a love or hate snuff. My only two problems with this snuff is that it disapears quickly and that it will make your nose run black.
