Reviews for Samuel Gawith Black Rappee

Samuel Gawith shine when they make rappees and blend various tobacco types. Many of these are quite rich and fulfilling. Rappees are course dark moist snuffs. The emphasis is on the course. Wilson's make a number of snuffs which they call rappees, and even one which they sub-name black rappee (Brunswick) but none of theirs are as course as the SG ones. You may compare this more to Scotch Black, Princes Dark, Cob Dark, and to a lesser extent London Brown and the Kendal Browns (which are essentially brown rappees) all from this company. There are probably several others I have missed, but I can only speak for the ones I have tried. Its mainly unscented as compared to Princes Dark and Cob Dark which are both perfumed. It may even be a bit courser and moister than those. It is less smokey and rich than the Scotch Black, but nonetheless quite rich in its own right. Tar, peat, coal and smoke are generally words used to describe the scent. There also seems to be some salt in this. As others have noted, you will have to learn the tenchnique for taking it as it will not sniff up easily due to its weight. Neither will it stay put in the nose until it is moistened up. Not for all day use, but its a a great one for perhaps once a day. I personally lean to the Scotch Black in this class, and the perfumed ones also, but this is quite well done. Also get it out of those worthless tap boxes as soon as you are able. It will dry up in there in no time and it is too course to pour out nicely anyway.

I usually prefer dry snuff, but this one really hit it home with me! Very clean, pure tobacco scent, and I love the tobacco base. It is very lumpy and you got to press a finger to the outside of the nostril after sniffing to keep it from falling out. Once you get used to the technique, it is pretty easy to take. I couldn't get this in bulk, so instead I went for WS Brunswick, what a disappointment! But only because I was told it was close to Black Rappee. Believe me - it is not!! Black Rappee is a snuff I like a lot, and would buy in bulk if I could. I hate the little ridiculous plastic container - but once tipped into my snuff box, it is no problem to pinch it.

Samuel Gawith has some strong tobacco scents in their snuffs. Black Rappee is just that. A strong latakia (pine smoked) tobacco scent. If you like English style pipe blends you might like this one or at least find the scent very familiar.

Very good straight black rappee. Chocolatey, biscuity, gives a good stingin the nose, but very nasty in the throat! Not the easiest snuff to sniff, due to moisture and grind, but such is the nature of any black rappee.

This is another strong straight tobacco snuff from Sam G. This one is just a bit too much for me. The flavor is good, but it lasts much too long for my liking. There seem to be a lot of this type of snuff out there, especially from SG. I would like it more if it were a bit dryer, and a bit more subtle of a flavor. I'm not going to throw it away, but I'm not going to buy another tin any time soon either. Perhaps it will grow on me over time, but right now it isn't the best.

There are just too many other snuffs that are plain, dark and heavy, with more depth than this one and due to grind and moisture it just creates too much of a mess, to be worth a 2nd box of it. One to be passed.

Dark brown to black, moist and very coarse and difficult to dispense from the hole in the plastic container. Lumpy, but very flavoursome leathery tobacco with a hint of coal tar. A bit of a struggle to keep in the nostril, but once there there is a nice slow release of nicotine. Certainly not an everyday or all day snuff, but one for after dinner perhaps. Will not appeal to everyone.

Another of the Samuel Gawith coarse snuffs revisted. My original comment was rather short and to the point: "Moist, black and coarse. Plain tobacco and tasty with it." Still true of course, but I think I have learned to appreciate Black Rappee even more. It is good, strong tobacco, perhaps lacking the slight smokiness of London Brown but very satisfying with a long lasting flavour. That solid tobacco flavour is so full that one could not call it a mere scent. The grind is coarse, the moisture is positively wet and the colour is as black as it gets. Perfect! The trick, as with all the Samuel Gawith coarse, dark snuffs, is to be sure that the snuff is fresh and moist. If it dries out even a little bit then the best of the flavour seems to go with the moisture. If it's dry it seems to turn clumpy and gritty. Of course the snuff can always be rehydrated but once it dried beyond a certain point it will prove impossible to recapture the essential qualities of the snuff. Buy it in bulk and use the three tier decanting system for daily use.
