Reviews for Samuel Gawith Otterhound

Caveat: The tin I found of this had actually been emptied out, then filled with the defecation of a syphilitic dog that had been force-fed chili peppers for a month prior. My nostrils burned off and now I spend half my waking hours screaming about black U.N. helicopters and the other half clawing at the massive bulbous structures covering my face and neck. I am thus forced to give this snuff one star. Hehe, okay, apologies to Xander for my slightly heavy-handed ribbing there, but honestly, is it not unfair to base one's review of a snuff on a knowingly stale tin? My experience based on a dispenser that is, at the very least, "more fresh than not" is quite different - this is a very strong scent; a pungent, perfumed snuff that lasts, and lasts, and LASTS in the nose. If it were even a tiny bit stronger this would probably be just as headache-forming as the Cuckoo, but as it is it causes nothing more than a bit of lightheadness after the fifteenth straight minute of smelling this scent. It's a pleasant enough scent, more like aftershave or scented powder than soap. I'm not even going to attempt to deconstruct the flavor beyond that. It's certainly not an all-day snuff, far too strong and perfumed (as opposed to floral) for sustained use, but it works quite nicely as a special-occasion snuff, or at bedtime, whether for dream-catching or just a nice scent to nod off to. I cannot in good faith give any more than three stars to such a limited "role player" of a snuff, but rest assured that the perfumed scent here is very much more that of an "upscale Crabtree & Evelyn" than it is the pungent reek of a tacky dollar store air freshener.

Caveat: the tin I found of this is rather old. Its an all yellow label and only has a fine print health warning. I found it rather boring, and the perfumed nature of it was very slight. I presume its faded a lot. Just a dry, dusty snuff with a hint of soap scent is what I have. It tends to clog my nose as well. I will attempt rehydration. I might get a fresh one someday and re-evaluate.

A finely ground, medium moist, fluffy, mid-brown snuff with a very distinctive, complex perfumed aroma. Initially it reminds you of walking through the perfume department of an upmarket department store and can be off-putting, but with further use it is quite pleasant for someone who enjoys perfumed or floral snuffs. The fluffy nature of the snuff makes it very easy on the nose, with little burn or sneeziness. The aroma lingers for a long time afterwards and becomes fruity. Nicotine levels are on the low side. An occasional snuff. 6/10.

The last time I took this was when it was marketed in a yellow coloured tin with a wonky hinged lid depicting a little black dog. I rarely post about snuff that I dislike, but I’ll make an exception here as Otter Hound is probably the most overtly scented snuff I’ve tried. It was like inhaling milled scented soap flakes. Samuel Gawith produce a number of outstanding snuffs, but this is not one of them. I kept the tin for many years as a container for paper clips.

Very perfumed and as far as I can make a comparison, along the lines of a Jockey club type snuff. This type of snuff is the sort of thing you have in your collection for the odd pinch, but I don't see many people having it as an all day snuff. I think these highly perfumed snuffs are just ones to collect and I would say they are 'second tier' snuffs.

This one is a fine ground medium moisture heavily perfumed snuff,an occasional treat for me,reminds me of a used dryer sheet,it does have low nicotine content though and a high sneeze factor, but still it's one for the snuff cabinet.
