A strong and very masculine scent of dark tobaccos. Reminds me of certain pipe tobaccos (Dunhill Nightcap comes to mind..) It's not an all-day snuff for me, but satisfies when I need to wake up a bit. The smell is very strong in the nose, and I like to take a pinch of this before taking a pinch of FT Old Paris, for the times when I need a bit more nicotine. I've experienced some dripping from the nose, and the moisture makes it somewhat more difficult to sniff than others. I enjoy this snuff.

I was expecting this to be more difficult than it was, given the reviews below, but it just turns out to be sublime. Dark, rough and smokey, but not in the BBQ sense of American Scotches, but more like a roaring fire deep in the woods in autumn. Intensely deep and complex, with an unusual richness that has nothing to do with sweetness, but rather with the intense flavor of the smoked tobacco base. I had no trouble getting it into my nose or keeping it there, but then I don't have much of a problem with Taxi Red either. This is nothing like a Toast or Scotch, nor is it anything like the other dark, coarse snuffs I've had in the sense that it is quite dry and heavily wooded and smoked, rather than earthy, in character. An amazingly deep, characterful snuff for straight tobacco, and as I said earlier, absolutely sublime. There's really nothing else outside the de Kralingse line that's like this, in my experience. High nicotine, as you would expect given the flavor.

I am a pipe smoker that uses English and Balkan blends, and this Latakia snuff is right up my alley. It is a course ground black snuff with a nice nose burn, smokey flavor, and high nicotine content. Can it get any better than this? Not for newbies or those who only like traditional snuffs such as SPs, but for the stout and adventurous. Speaking of stout, I bet that would be a good combination with this snuff.

This one is smokey and rich. very different type of smokey than a scotch. I really like it. I will definatally buy this again, along with all the De Kralingse snuff but this one really sticks out in my mind almost as good as A/P but differently although similar.

A very pleasant natural tobacco snuff. Extremely dark, and quite coarse, it goes up without any issue. I do find that sometimes the De Kralingse snuffs tend to drip down my throat in one unpleasant lump, leaving a very nasty sting. Regardless, this snuff is still excellent, as that happens rarely enough. Strong, smoky flavour comes through clearly, and lingers for quite some time. It has a decent nicotine kicks to it, and reminds me of the taste of American Spirit Perique. I really love this stuff, and the home printed looking labels, along with the old fashion production methods, just make the history geek in me happy.

Oh this is good stuff. Go to this link to see the actually pictorial on the two old mills that produce it http://www.wired.com/underwire/2009/06/gallery_snuff/ Coarse, easy to take and oh, so smokey. Lingers for awhile and hits with a super smooth fuzzy glove. I too was a pipe smoker for years and this really brings back those times. I like the hand crafted appeal this snuff has. I mean, even the labels on the dispenser look like those old Dutch mill guys made them as needed on a home printer, but very well done. A little coarse for all day I would think, but maybe not. Recommeded not only for good wholesomeness, but also it's Old Worldliness.

The only genuine Latakia snuffs I’ve sampled were Fribourg & Treyer's Asthoroth and the short-lived Cyprus from Wilsons of Sharrow, which was introduced to the list in the early 1980s by Mark Chaytor. Whether this is genuine Latakia is open to speculation, but this is a very rare snuff - only the second example of commercial Carotte I've ever come across. Carotte refers to the special shape tobacco that was used with a rasp before the advent of commercially made snuff, and is not to be confused by snuffs that include Carotte in the description (French Carotte for example). With most snuff the expressions Fine, Demigros, Gros apply, and mean fine, medium and coarse respectively. However, Carotte (here meaning the extremely coarse grade as well as the stick) continued to be made commercially well into the 19th century. It was not usually intended to be taken by itself, but used in a mixture with a finer grade snuff. Certain authoritative documents - such the monologue by George Evans - are insistent upon this point. In this spirit De Kralingse Latakia AO 1860 may be better enjoyed by some people mixed, and provides material for endless blending experiments which, as much as the end combination, is pleasing in itself. The best mixture I’ve tried is equal parts of De Kralingse Latakia AO 1860 and Princes by Frederick Tranter. Whatever discretion is used one may be assured of the rich and heady flavour of this fine tobacco. Take it neat and some people will appreciate why the Carotte and rasp was quickly superseded by conventional snuff. Anyway, rightly or wrongly that is my tuppence worth.

The undisputed heavyweight champion of snuffs. Sits as broad in the nose as an elephant. For sure not an all and everyday snuff and it wasn´t supposed to be, I guess. At least not for the average snuff fan. Pipe smokers which only occasionally use snuff might see it differently. Sets the path for the rest of the day, when taken, so you won´t switch to other snuffs after this. Too rich, excellent and dark to sniff something lighter afterwards. But that´s not a bad thing at all. Should at least be tried once by every snuff fan, if not fully set on fruit menthol snuffs. And it should be given a few days time then.

Earthy and smokey. It also has a hint of that pine scent thats so pronounced in its sister, the A/P. I also find this to be an extremely heavy snuff, it has very high courseness and moderately high moisture when fresh. I'd recomnend a little chopper, blade or spoon to mash this up a bit before taking it. This same recommendation would apply to the A/P. Also it can get a little "throaty" if you leave it in too long, so keep your hanky handy. Highly recommended for a walk in the woods on a brisk autumn afternoon, or sitting by the fire with a hot cup of tea or cider on a cold autumn evening. Ao is short for Anno, Latin for "year." 1860 is the date of the recipe.

Very unusual snuff. I used to be a pipe smoker and this takes me back to those big bowls of heavy Latakia blends I enjoyed. Nothing is like the smokey flavor of this snuff. It stays with you for hours and gives quite a nicotine kick as well.

De Kralingse Latakia AO 1860 is a taste of the old world with a wonderful smoky, spicy tobacco scent that lasts for a good while. You can tell that this recipe has not been touched in a great period of time. This snuff was actually ground in one of 2 functioning Dutch windmills! The only one's in the world I believe, that alone constitutes giving this a try but it is truly a unique and special snuff that I would say is most fitting towards experienced users. It would be perfect for an injured fire fighter ...ok, thats going a bit overboard - lol! Cheers, 4.6 dark brown nostrils ~Myche

THis is a unique snuff, nothing else like it. Reminds me of days gone by when we were cooking over open fires. I don't use this everyday but once I've started, I will go all evening. Clogs up my nose a bid but that;'s OK. It mixes well with Jaxons Cafe Creme to bring forth a sweet, dark, smoky snuff which is delicious. I love snuff!!

Recommending this to ex-pipe smokers. As others have said, its the closest thing you'll get to snuffing pipe tobacco. It reminds me of old brown shoes, damp dogs and Porter. It's Wonderful. An essential addition to any snuff stash. A grown up snuff for people who like to taste tobacco.

I used to smoke pipes and this is the closest snuffing comes to smoking pipe tobacco with Latakia. I love it. It is not an all day snuff unless you love the scent of dark spicy smoke in your nose all day. Great occasional evening snuff. It is tempting to snort great heaping nosefuls, but you will feel like you stuck a cinder up your nostril.

This is a definite favorite. When I first tried this snuff, I immediately placed another order for some quantity. Smokey dark Latakia tobacco, easy on the nose. The medium-course, semi-moist grind keeps it in place nicely. Keep a box of tissues handy as this one requires a good blow every now and then. I think this one should be on the must-try list for anyone starting out in the wonderful world of snuff.

Delicious Latakia aroma familiar to many pipe smokers. Best taken in moderation but can become habit-forming!

A strong tobacco with rich smoke tones. Not an everyday snuff for me but one I can enjoy a few times a week. Wish it was a finer grind.

Pure latakia tobacco, so smoky. Medium-dry and medium coase mill. Strong nicotine. Highly recommended.

Dark, smokey, course, a delicious intermezzo from the SP snuffs. A bit rich for all day use. Recommended. A little sneezy for me. The initial scent is not a favorite of mine but the full bodied vanilla like tobacco scent that develops is quite nice. I will use this for blending.
