Reviews for De Kralingse Macuba

A golden medium to coarse grinded rose- and cognac-scented virginia tobacco. It’s not a snuff for the daily rotation, but nevertheless a delicious composition.

Nothing like the F&T Macouba, which I also love; the de Kralingse is a completely different scent, although I'm told it's based on rose oil and cognac. I was expecting it to be strongly flavored with a more floral rose, but Macuba's scent is very difficult to pin down, and unlike anything else I've ever had except maybe the Prins Regent, which I tried prior to trying the Macuba. Almost overwhelmingly delicious, it reminds me of brown sugar, warm salt air, sweet, freshly sawed wood, some kind of warm-weather spices, rope and maybe rum or brandy. Very coarse and dry, with very little burn, it still makes its presence felt in the nose in the most delightful way for a long time, but like all de Kralingse snuffs can lead to a nasty drip no matter how carefully it's taken. Well worth the trouble, however. Moderate nicotine, but lends itself to repeated pinches. It makes me feel like I'm aboard a ship of war in the Caribbean during the late 18th century. On the Quarterdeck, of course. A snuff that might well have been used by Patrick O'Brian's Captain Jack Aubrey.

Macuba (a variant spelling of Macouba) shares almost nothing in common with its F&T namesake. The only things that unite them are the rose oil in the scenting. Like all de Kralingse snuffs, this is snuff resurrected from the history books and made in a working pair of windmills. This of course is evidence that macoubas of old were widely varied (apart from the rose scenting). The other scenting here is cognac which blends beautifully with the Virginia tobacco and the rose. DeKralingse uses this base for several of their snuffs, but the cognac flavor is only in this and Prins Regent. This blend of flavors is truly magnificent and gives a sort of rustic "rope" scent or character. It has a pleasant enough nicotine effect but the course grind tends to make it somewhat tricky and it will make the nose run and may cause some throast drip. Other than that, its easy enough for a beginner to take, though. My only complaint is that the snuff will get dried out too quickly and the boxes it is sold in are not very airtight. I recommend buying it fresh and then decanting into a better sealing container unless you plan on using it quickly. Also recommended for those who dislike florals, as the floral nature of this is toned down and well balanced by the cognac.

Delicate rose flavour! Goes very, very well along with the fine Virginia tobacco used here. There´s more than just rose in it, but this is dominating and the other are complementing, boosting it and let it shine even more. Highly recommended for everyone, not only floral lovers (which I´m myself am not). Rehydrating may be a good idea, as it´s VERY dry in the usual De Kralingse spice box (I´d highly recommend them using something else for their snuffs!!!). Nonetheless, very easy to sniff. Easily an all day snuff.

Golden brown, very coarse, scented and dry. Judging from previous reviews, there is too much inconsistency in the moisture and grind levels. My sample was so coarse and dry, it was rather like sniffing nicely scented sawdust. The problem is if you don't sniff hard enough it falls out, but too hard and it reaches the throat. The aroma is good though: roses, pot-pourri and cedar-wood. Nicotine levels are average. Not one I would buy again due to the grind. 5/10.

Light in colour, with a beautiful, well rounded flavour to it - my batch is a bit on the dry side, so I might need to rehydrate it a little bit - an excellent snuff, well suited to beginners and expert snuffers alike.

Moderate grind, and on the dry side, but not too dry. This snuff is amazing and it takes several minutes to be able to pinpoint the blending on scents in it. The rose and cognac is delicate. Nice burn to it, although more from the cognac's "spicey" scent than the nicotine. Very nice.

Superior snuff! Delicate, lasting, delicious subtle flavor. I love this tobacco base. Sweet Virginia. This flavor is so highly esteemed by me that I used it to make a mix with some of my precious Spanish Jewel. The other Virginia snuffs that Dekraslings has use this as their base as well. Very nice! Very, very nice!

This snuff was my absolute favorite for a time, and I still enjoy it very much when I can get it (it appears Mars no longer carries it). I think ermtony has an old batch because mine was slightly moist and a bit clumpy, but broke up easily. This is a very refreshing snuff, nice to take any time of day, but like most DeKralingse snuffs, a good blow will be needed after a few minutes. The cognac scent is blended in just right, not overpowering and a bit mysterious as to what it is at first. Definitely would recommend this to beginners or seasoned noses alike.

Medium dry and medium coarse, light-brown. Delicate rose and cognac flavour. Quite strong and very nice.
