Reviews for Bernard Klostermischung

Dark fruits (dates, figs, and raisins) mixed with maple and rum flavorings make for a pleasant taste. The grind is a bit odd, seems rather gritty. I've found that with schmalzlers (even though this is technically a hybrid) that giving your nose a pinch after sniffing helps to keep it in place. I just wish that came in larger sizes as the 10g tap out goes pretty fast.

Sadly the 50g packs (wich included a spoon) of this snuff seem to be no longer made. It comes in the standard tap out dispenser in miniscule 10g size. I tend to pour this out and use my own spoon for it, as its usually to dense to budge via sniffing off the hand. I had heard that this was not a schmalzler in the strictest sense, but more of a halb-schmalzer which is a snuff-schmalzler hybrid. As I am not entirely clear on the definitions of those terms, I can not be certain. I am certain that this is quite distinct from any other schmalzlers. The grind is quite course, like sand, but presumably this is the moisture binding smaller particles together, as it does seem to crush under finger pressure. The moisture is like in the Brasil Feinst in that the oil moisture is inside the particles and they are dry on the outside. This makes classing it either as moist or dry impossible. Greasy but gritty I suppose is the right description. Once in the nose (and you can take loads of it) it moistens up into a nice paste that will eventually find its way out by running or throat drip. The former is preferable as the drip has a sour and harsh taste. The flavor is also unique among schmalzlers. It is the sweetest of Bernard's offerings, and has an excellent rum and maple scent. Very rich and nearly black. Kloster (or cloister) is a monastary, so this translates to "Monastary Mixture." I presume monks made snuffs in days of old. A rather un-holy looking monk is depicted on the package with a look that he is doing something more unseemly than he appears to be. The painter had a great sense of humor it seems. Bernard's generally have some very nice artwork on their labels. This is one you must try if you are experimenting with schmalzers. It is unique.

Sweet smelling and fruity, I like this snuff mostly because it hasn't got any menthol in it. I love my Bernard's schmalzlers, but I don't always want menthol with it, and this was one of a few options available to me when I made my introductory order to Bernard's. The dispenser is something of a pain, but that can always be solved by decanting into another container.

This schmalzer has all the usual flavours of the type - a rich, spicy puddingy mixture of homely warm scents - but in this case, the grind gives the actual experience of shoving crumbs of Christmas pudding up your nostrils. For my tastes, it's ridiculously coarse, and extremely difficult to keep in the nose while ultimately not repaying the effort. Unlike the other Bernard schmalzers, the long-legged tobacco flavour seems to be missing from the basenote, and you're left with a superficially flavoured experience, lacking the complexities of some of the competition, and offering predominately sweet aromas to the palate. Low nicotine and a fruity smoothness mean that you can put this up your nose all night, but the grind means that you'll have to. It's a trivial and irrelevant point, but he packaging differs from other Bernard's snuffs, replacing the friendly "Schmalzerfranzl" with some kind of hideous ecclesiastical rapist/serial killer with lipstick on. "It puts the schmalzer up its nose, or it gets the hose again" would probably be the only way to get me to use this as my regular schmalzer, but if there were no others available I'd proably buy an evening's supply.

A bit unfair to say this is my least favourite Schmalzler, as the quality and flavour are still way beyond most available snuffs on the market. But compared to other Schmalzler, this one lacks a few things. First of all it´s quite hard to take and to keep where it belongs. The dispenser´s a pain, taking ages to pour the snuff out if it, due the grind and moisture. The flavour´s good and the addition of rum very welcomed. But it hasn´t got the richness most other Schmalzer have. Still, the flavour is excellent. I just wouldn´t trade it for the Bernard Doppelaroma ever. The packaging is a bit creepy, with that evil grinning lipsticked monk.

Dark brown, almost black, extra coarse and gritty and quite dry. This is probably my least favourite schmalzer snuff. Although the dark fruits, rum, maple syrup, coffee and pipe tobacco flavours are all very nice, the grind is just too coarse and gritty, making the whole snuff taking experience a bit hit and miss (not one for public use!). I do like it though when I manage to keep it in my nose. 6/10.

Klostermischung is the best non-mentholated schmalzler I've tried. The flavor is sweet with an aftertaste of rum and dates. It good enough that I want to eat the stuff. Well maybe not, but it is very good. If they would quit using the plastic dispensers I'd give it 6 or 7 stars if I could. I even like the creepy monk in the picture. LOL

This snuff is delicious. Very little burn and very easy to take. It is clogging if overindulged. Dark notes of fruity sweetness abound. If I had teeth in my nose, I would chew it. It will become a regular snuff in my collection. I recommend it to those who like sweet snuff (and who like to keep it away from their throat).

I wasn't sure what to expect but I am really fond of this one. It seemed like the container wasn't as full as it could have been but I guess it's a pretty heavy snuff. I picked up on the dates, figs, apple, even raisins all mixed together like a German rum cake or something, very cool! Great packaging too...it's a little coarse but the overall experience is a thumbs up. Somehow this one really works for what it is. Close your eyes and float away to a cozy kitchen somewhere in ancient Bavaria. 4.2 black nostrils

I like the candy fruit flavor. I would call it raisin/date with a hint of apple. I give it only 3 stars because of the coarse grind and the package. I can't use it vary well off the back of my hand. Even when I pinch, it does not stay in the nose well.

Klostermischung has a good flavor to it but the gritty coarseness is somewhat distracting. I'm wondering if there is some kind of conditioning trick I could use to take the edges off the grind.

This is a relatively dry Schmalzler type snuff. It's sweet and mild with a hint of rum and it leaves a nicely lingering rich tobacco flavour in the nose. The grind is coarse, almost gritty and the colour is black. Well worth a try.

sold in 50g packs, with spoon in it. has a very nice old-fashioned picture of a snuff-loving clergyman on it. nostalgia at its finest. the colour is a dark black and the grind is rather coarse, but it is not moist. as a schmalzler it is slightly greasy - maybe gritty is the word for it. the scent is of good old-fashioned schmalzler-brasil with just a hint of apple vinegar to it . very nice and i find the vinegar taste very refreshing. as it is so mild you can easily pack large pinches. and it will not blow you away. the nicotine is low to medium only.
