Splendid snuff from Sam Gawith (nothing new there, then).
Its name is a little confusing (it's not like Irish D Original, despite similarities in the name and some snuff suppliers averring that the two are identical!), but that's a minor gripe. Light to take, light in texture and light in colour, this has a honey-ish taste which is more than rather nice. and which is great to take when a little "snuffed-out" from taking handfulls of stronger, heavier snuffs.
Unfortunately, it's too light to satisfy me on its own so, having been delivered a large tub of it in error (I'd actually ordered Irish D Original), I decided to see what it was like mixed with other snuffs. Thank heaven I did: I've found my current absolute favourite day-to-day by a combination of 5:3 SG Irish D Light to F&T HDT. Sheer bliss!

This is my favorite HDT. Not as finely ground as others, yet nice and fluffy. I find it hard to get this to go to the back of the throat unlike the other HDT's. The flavor is quite nice. A sweet honey and smokey aroma that lingers for a bit. I could take this all day.

Not quite as fine as a few of the other toasts out there, this still is in that category of grind. The thing that sets this toast apart is its carmel-honey sweetness. It still has enough smokey cookie goodness to it, but less of the butter-nut-bacon type hints you get from other toasts. Apparantly this was F&T's HDT long ago. Now its Samuel Gawith's alone. Horrible dispenser, especially for a snuff this fine. This one is perhaps not suitable to beginners, but for me its a little easier to manage than Wilsons, Toque or F&T.

If this was more readily available, and came in a different, less cumbersome container, it would be among the most popular of High Dry Toasts. A great burn and warming sensation, a pronounced but light, sweetish, bacon character with just a touch of smoke. Nothing artificial or contrived tasting. After trying a number of "off the beaten track" Toasts, I was quite surprised to find this one to be as distinctive as it is. Unlike many Toast's, the scent is initially subtle, but lingers quite a bit longer than some others I've tried. It looks drier and harder to take than it is; I've yet to have it hit the back of my throat when taking normal sized pinches. Medium nicotine. One of the very best Toasts available in my opinon, and one which distinguishes itself in a very distinguished field. If you were doing a horizontal tasting of Toasts, you'd be able to pick this one out blind every time, unlike some others I could name. I wish it was available in bulk.

I have been using a lot of American Scotches lately, so this was not at all strong to me. It is a light, fine grind snuff. No real burn in the nose, but a mild, almost sweet tobacco flavour. It can be snuffed in rapid succession, and is suitable for all day use. A good toast for beginners because it is easy to take, but will be enjoyed by experienced users also.

Very pale indeed, finely ground (but not as fine as other toasts) and very dry, this snuff is quite different from other English examples of the style. Gentle sniffs are required to stop it hitting the throat, so it is not for the beginner. The initial aroma is sweet, honey like with a sawdust, woody character and some floral character in the finish. Although quite enjoyable, it is not a favourite of mine - I prefer their Irish D Original which is less sweet; I also prefer the Wilsons, F&T and Toque offerings which have more of a biscuity, toasted character. Also the sliding dispenser is inappropriate for the style of snuff (it jams it up!). 6/10.

Very pale and very fine, this is a beautifully crafted snuff, apparently, this is what used to be sold as the original F&T HDT. It tastes a good deal sweeter to me than other toasts initially, rather reminiscent of a US Sweet Scotch, and then the wonderful nutty flavour of well toasted tobacco comes through. D-lightful indeed.

This one´s one of my most cherished snuffs. It´s a bit hard to take due to the fine grind, but it doesn´t give you a choking sensation in case you sniff it a bit too hard. Delicate flavour, maybe a hint of caramel or even toffee. Plain toasted tobacco goodness. When I press the dispenser, small puffs of dust emerge, so be warned, it´s really fine grind in there.
A very uplifting snuff, personally I couldn´t be without this gem in my collection.

An incredible snuff! A bit difficult to take first, but when you learn how to handle it, it´s plain and simply a d-light. One of the best snuffs out there.

Before the sad demise of Fribourg & Treyer nearly 30 years ago, this was their High Dry Toast. They simply bought the Kendal snuff and sold it in their tall tins at a hugely inflated price. Here the 'D' stands for Dry, and the snuff is both very light and dry. Along with 'Irish High Toast 22' by Wilsons of Sharrow this is one of the very few surviving examples of genuine Irish left. Light biscuit in colour, it is an extremely pungent natural snuff with a caramel/smoky flavour. Owing to its fineness it is not recommended to the novice.

This is a great snuff with a real creamy smooth tobacco scent. This is a dry, very powdery fine snuff. You often get a dust cloud when you take the lid off. If you like dry fine snuffs, this one is a must try.

Pale, toasty and tasty! Hard to choose between this and Wilson's of Sharrow's IHT No 22.
