Reviews for Bernard Aecht Altbayrischer Schmalzler

A very coarse moist dark snuff with classic taste. It actually reminds me of dark choclate. It might not be the most beginner friendly snuff but it is not bad and is perfect when you drink a Guiness. The classic german way to prepare the tobacco gives it a taste that is rather unique. One of the best german snuffs.

"Aecht" is an antiquated German/Bavarian word for "genuine" or "real". Its almost the equivalent of saying "Ye Olde" in English. "Altbayerischer" means "Old Bavarian". So you get the general idea, its the real old fashioned Bavarian schmalzler. I find it to be sweeter and less smokey than the Brasil types from Bernard. It has deep rich notes of maple syrup and dried figs and dates as others have mentioned. It is also got a higher degree of grit to its grind, meaning it will dissolve in your nose into a runny mess. I try to avoid blowing as long as possible, so I often have this on my face while enjoying it. Not for heavy use in public places! Excellent with a hot cup of strong tea. Nice nicotine buzz. My only complaint is the small (10g) sizes its sold in. They work well enough, but empty too quickly.

This snuff is very coarse and wet, the moistness and thick grain of it makes it very easy to sniff large amounts of it and it does stay in the nose, but on the other hand, it clogs me up pretty quickly and sometimes gives me the sneezes. I like how easy it is on my nose, almost no burn to speak of, feels soft and fluffy/cakey when sniffing, but some of the coarser particles in it are a bit like sand, which is evident upon blowing them out- if I blow my nose, sometimes I feel like I'm being scraped on the upper lip by these thicker, sharper chunks. The flavor itself is complex and interesting; it isn't mentholated, but has almost an echo of a menthol aftersmell to it, like walking into a room where someone has used Vicks vap-o-rub. Otherwise, it's malty with a molasses-sweetness, and once it opens up in the nose I catch a very distinct note of licorice, as in licorice tea or black licorice candy rope. Very sweet. It's a delight to have around, but due to it clogging me up I have to blow it out pretty quickly, which makes it less practical for taking when out and about. This is a snuff I take when I'm sitting in the den relaxing by myself after dinner. I haven't noticed any kind of 'strong nic hit' from this snuff, I don't go to this one for that, but I handed this snuff to a friend who wanted to try it once while having a glass of wine after work, and he swears it made his head spin. He ended up ralphing shortly afterwards! I took a star off for sandiness and cloggisms.

Rich, moist, and filling. It reminds me of the malt loaf bread that I had in Germany and England. Not irritating, it doesn't dive for the back of the throat. Lots of dark moist fruit flavors, it is a dessert like a rich coffee cake. Real good with a cup of good coffee. I wonder if there is a blend of schmalzler that has expresso notes? Dark brown, coarsely ground, medium moist schmalzer snuff with an aroma of roast coffee, brown sugar, maple syrup, rum and dried fruits. Slightly gritty, but easy to take and with a slow satisfying release of nicotine. Over indulgence will lead to a bitter drip in the throat, which seems common to German snuffs. Works well with a cup of good coffee or after dinner. 8/10.

Nearly impossible to go wrong with a Schmalzler, in case one takes no offense to the sweetness in most of them. This one has a very well done, moderate sweetness to it. Very delicious, malty flavour. But there are many more nice, delicious flavours making their presence felt here, maple, figs, highly complex. A pure balm for the nose and the soul. Very essential. The container is very nice, too. It´s a side slid one in all black with golden lettering. Very stylish, indeed.

An immediate hit with me. This is exactly what I expected a schmalzler to be. Long lasting headiness, deep sweet fruit, and deliciously aromatic. The all black with gold lettering box is nice too. I can guarantee I'll get caught looking as if I have a nosebleed while I try to delay the blowing out of this gorgeous treat.

This schmalzler tastes to me like a sweet liquor initially. It is coarse and easy to take. Later its flavor becomes more fruity (my lady describes it like figs) and lasts a moderate while. I find it interesting because I experience the flavor developing. It reminds me of a sweet dynamic non-aromatic tobacco blend smoked in a large bowl pipe. I recommend it to those who like their tobacco without invasive toppings. Enjoy!

I have tried three Bernard Schmalzlers now and, sorry to be a philistine but, they are all the same; like sniffing cake crumbs, particularly in this instance, Black Forest Gateau cake crumbs. They are chocolatey, sweet, moist and softly coarse. This is not a bad thing, and they have a certain appeal, but they are the Muscat de Beaumes de Venise of snuffs, very much a dessert snuff; Very easy on the nose flavoured like maple syrup, rum and figs. I would have been missing something quite special if I had ignored Schmalzlers altogether, but as a type its only similarity to tobacco is those lovely rummy Dutch pipe tobaccos. Certainly one to try, so at least you know.

This is my first venture with a Schmalzler. My immediate impression of this snuff was a malty, alcoholic flavour. A bit like McCrystals 'beery' snuff, the German name of which escapes me for the moment, though the Bernards is darker and moister. Very pleasant but a bit early for an in-depth review. Case with the slide opening is cute too!

A vey coarse and gritty dark brown Schmalzler. The coarse grind makes it easy to snuff, even HUGE pinches.I mostly get a strong and sweet maple flavor, almost a little too sweet for me to use all day.Nicotine seems to be on the medium side.Another quality product from Bernard.

a very solid schmalzler. comes in a nice old-fashioned bernhard slide-lid ox. coarse grind and, as all schmalzlers, more gritty than moist. means it holds the moisture quite long. the taste is of dark, heavy, slightly sweet brasil leaf. it is not as sweet as some other schmalzlers. its speciality is a light roasted scent that somehow reminds me of barbecue without meat on it.

Schmalzler, mild spicy, maple-flavour and sweet. Dark brown, coarse and moist. Lovely stuff.
