I'm quite glad that a friend decided to give me a generous portion from his bulk purchase of this snuff. I could see this suffering the most of all SG snuffs in those ridiculous dispensers. This snuff is the moistest English snuff I have ever encountered. This snuff is nearly like mud in consistancy. It would dry out in a matter of days in one of Samuel Gawith's tap boxes. Its so moist that I need to physically press the snuff into my nose, as I have not enough wind to insufflate it. It can be rather messy, and leaves a bit of mud on my fingers. Its well worth it though, as the flavor is very rich and earthy. I'd probably prefer Black Rappee or Scotch Black to this one, as they are slightly less moist. Those two also have more of peaty, smokey taste and this one is more earthy. All are very similar though. The nicotine gives a longer effect than finer snuffs, and can be felt moderatley for several minutes. I have to put up with a fair amout of nose run to enjoy the full effects.

After rehydrating outside the tap box I have discovered this snuff to be quite pleasant. A full bodied tobacco scent. Sits well in the nose providing lasting pleasure. Very dark I'd say to be calling it a brown. This tobacco has slightly similar characteristics of the Black Rappee upon the initial sniff. It quickly mellows to a warm McCombie like base with hints of smokey Black Rappee. Good stuff...this is what I have in mind when I think about what plain snuff should be like.

I love this snuff. Coarse, moist, with glittery bits in it. Large clumps of tobacco. It does take a good sniff to get it in the beak. One of my favorites from the SG line.

Absolutely delicious. As if they took one of the old-school Kendal Browns (think Gawith Hoggarth or Samuel Gawith themselves) and got rid of whatever slight bit of pretention lurks in that no-nonsense blend. This is pungent and leathery, earthy, heavy; without the slightest hint of synthetic flavoring or artificial additives. This is the humidor of a long-standing cigar shop compressed into snuff form. Very coarse, one of the coarsest snuffs out there, if not possibly THE coarsest. Requires a hefty sniff to get it up the ol' honker, and may God have mercy on your soul if it dries up, as is the case with my first batch - I grew frustrated with the endless tapping required to get this thick stuff out of the cruddy little SG dispenser, and ended up emptying it all into an empty snus container. It ended up drying out a little - not bone-dry, mind you, just lacking in the subtle stickiness of the fresh-from-the-dispenser variety. It now requires I practically snort the stuff to get it up, but that's the price one pays for experimentation. It causes a lot of secretion in the nose, which only sets off a second round of the rich, leathery flavor. Finally, one has practically no choice but to blow - a very, very messy blow - and hence comes the third, and final, wave of flavor. A three-stage rocketship of tobacco goodness. A lot of snuffs are described as "leathery", but this one puts virtually all the rest to shame. Oh, wow! The first Samuel Gawith snuff that sold out on Nicotine Rush - so unless Tom ordered less of this than the rest, I think this says something about its quality. It's also my first SG reorder, and never have I been more tempted to make a special bulk order from Mr. Gawith. One of the greats.

A very heavy, plain, dark tobacco is used here, superb grade of fermentation. But it ain´t going too much into the old leather direction. It rather has a very slight sweetness, reminding a bit of Perique tobacco. You have to put some strenght in sniffing this, or it makes a nice pattern on your floor. Can´t keep it from creating at least a little mess, but it´s worth it. The container is totally useless for this kind of moistured snuff. It´s hard to get it out of the dispenser and the amount can´t be controlled. It cries for being in a tin. Creates heavy secretion and the scent stays for a long time. Tempted to give it only 4 stars due to the container, but this snuff´s so good...

Rappee marketed as 'London Brown' has been made since Regency days or even earlier. The name refers to the dark brown colour produced by 'painting' refined sugar with molasses and to the city where, centuries ago, this process was first developed. It reminds me of the snuff sold in brown paper parcels I used to buy in France. This is the closest snuff to genuine Morlaix currently available, and it is quite different to the snuff marketed under the name of that town in Bretagne in northwestern France by Wilsons of Sharrow. Some snuffs are velvety smooth and scented to a degree where the uninitiated might not realise that it is ground tobacco. No such mistake can be made here. It is dark and earthy with a grind that is only matched by SG’s black rappee in coarseness. A short, sharp sniff is required - otherwise most of the snuff will roll out of your nose. I like it, but feel that London Brown is unlikely to appeal to many people. It is not recommended to the tyro. (Like its sibling, Black Rappee, London Brown is very moist and coarse. I recently received a plastic 10-gram sampler box with light coloured, dry, stale content that was unfit for consumption. The real goods, in my opinion, are now only available in drums or the 25 gram vacuum-sealed tins.)

Moist, dark brown and coarse. Plain tobacco and tasty with it.
