Reviews for Bernard Alt Offenbacher Köstlich

Köstlich translates to "Delicious" in English and I have no argument with that. So, this snuff is the more flavorful one from Old Offenbacher. It seems that Bernard is moving away from the nice little bottles for their snuffs (and the foil packages for their schmalzlers) with a few exceptions. I'm a little disappointed that I did not get one of the bottles before they switched to tap out boxes. The old bottles apparantly told the buyer that it containted a blend of three aromatic tobaccos. This box only tells me that its from a recipe from the year 1923 Actually, I don't have an problem with tap-out boxes for German snuffs, I just think they make no sense for English snuffs. Its not as airtight as I would like, but it is functional. The snuff is very nice. Its not as sweet or as sticky as a schmalzler. Its reasonably dry for a German snuff, but the snuff is clearly oil based and it holds onto its moisture well. It has a very strong character, very smokey and robust without being offensive. Its woody and earthy, it reminds me of leaf fires burning in the autumn as a child. This was my first proper German snuff and I'm going to keep it in my regular rotation. Highly recommended, even to beginners.

This is a mixture of three different tobaccos. It’s just delicious, a pure tobacco pleasure. Highly recommended.

I opened this expecting a schmalzler (when I placed the order, I was under the mistaken impression that's all Bernard's did), and was surprised and disappointed when I first tried it. It's similar to the De Kralingse Latakia Ao 1860. Very smoky, unadorned tobacco. Having gotten over the initial disappointment of it not being a schmalzler, I like it. It's not something I'd want every day, but when i take it, it's enjoyable. Strong smoke scent, and it tends to make me sneeze. Still, the scent lingers, and smells like a nice campfire.

This is very much like a cross between a schmaltzer and a latakia - I get a 'cakey' smell similar to Bernard's schmaltzers upon opening the dispenser and initially upon snuffing, but then an earthy, strong dark tobacco flavour reaches out from underneath in a most satisfying manner. If you've tried Bernard's schmaltzers and found them too cloying and sweet, I urge you to give this one a try.

Dark brown, coarsely ground and medium moist. Reminds me of a quality pipe tobacco, with a hint of black cherry and plenty of leather. Dark fruits, old wood and tobacco goodness linger in the finish. Really very nice and easy on the nose. Not too much nicotine. 8/10.

An outstanding gem, thankfully still in production. These days it comes in a Samuel Gawith like dispenser. Moisture is medium to moist, thus very easy to take. Reminding a bit of the De Kralingse Latakia, but not as overwhelming. Still it´s sitting quite heavy in the nose. Old leather comes to mind, wonderful flavour. Perfect grade of fermentation. Not an all day snuff, for sure, but at "those" moments, it´s a revelation. Very highly recommended.

This is dark tobacco with a strong smokey incense flavour. Very nice for a change between the "plain" Schmalzler-Versions.

Interesting tobacco with solid character. If there is any fermentation in the process, then it renders its tones in a very subtle way. I agree with Juxtaposer below, regarding the latakia-like smokiness. As a matter of fact, I found it a little reminiscent of the smokiness in some De Kralingse’s latakia blends. This one is less aggressive to my sinus. It is easy to take and I enjoy it. I recommend it to the pure tobacco snuff aficionado.

This Schmaltzler is more like snuffing tobacco and less like snuffing cake crumbs, like some of its stablemates. A bit fiery, and it makes my nose run, but ok.

Not as oily or fruity as the schmalzlers. A little smokey like latakia and that makes it sneezy for me. I really like it though. It has a good tobacco spiciness to it. The aroma is like the oriental salted licorice plum snack that we have here in Hawaii called Li Hing Mui.

Great natural tobacco snuff. Goes very well with bourbon. Irritates my nose a little, but my bottle was rather old and could have been drier than it's supposed to be.

Dark brown with some lighter specks, good and strong tobacco flavor, spicy but also sweet. This excellent snuff has a medium grind and fairly low moisture and a good amount of nicotine.Comes in a nice old fashioned looking 14gr (1/2oz.) glass bottle. Easy 5 stars

Natural, sweet and aromatic with smoky undertones. The grind is medium, moisture medium-dry and the colour is medium to dark brown. Nicotine level is medium. The label says it is a blend of 3 aromatic tobaccos with no extra flavouring and that the recipe is from 1923. Certainly I can't detect anything but tobacco in there. The flavour is excellent though not long lasting in the nose. As it is easy to take, topping up regularly isn't a problem. Most attractive is the 14g glass bottle it come in. The bottle seems to keep the snuff fresh enough.

i tend to think of this as the "strong" versiom of the "offenbacher cardinal". the sweetness is much stronger and it has an overall liquorish feeling to it. also a bit spicy. but that may come from the fine grind. it is also very dry and i find it a bit hard to snuff without getting it in my throat. moisturing might help, did not try yet. no menthol. it is part of a series of "classic" style snuffs, that are manufactured following old recipes and is sold in small glass bottles. pretty.
