*THE* Schmalzler to end all Schmalzlers. Currently 14 reviews as of this writing, and the lowest score it's gotten is 4 stars - when all the members of the snuff community are in general consensus, you know you've found a magical snuff. And don't worry about setting your expectations too high - this snuff will meet and likely exceed them. When I first tried this, I was in the "4 star" minority, but holy moley does this snuff ever grow on me. Each and every sniff leaves me fantasizing that much more about the next sniff, and the next sniff always seems better. Luxurious and rich; husky, dusky, musty and lusty - seeped in the smells of dates, figs, raisins and chocolate. The nicotine may not be the highest, but that's just an excuse to snuff more - or maybe the nicotine IS high, and I just want an excuse to snuff more. If only this came in something larger than the 10g dispenser! Anyway, in short, this is the perfect introduction to Schmalzing, and recommended for everyone interested in developing a rounded snuff palette.

There is no doubt in my mind why this is Bernard's flagship product. This is the schmalzler by which all others must be measured.
I really can't add much to the comments below, as this snuff is well reviewed, but I write reviews for my own records.
Doppelt Fermentiert means "double fermented" presumably that means it went twice to get extra flavoring. It is quite sweet and has all of the sweet flavors others have mentioned, namely maple and dried fruits. Its very rich and although course, its quite soft. It does not cause much nose-burn, but will cause moderate running. Very full bodied, strong but not smokey tobacco flavors. Schmalzlers, I find I can take in quite large quantities and I'm a bit dissapointed at the small, though convenient, 10g boxes. These boxes-not so good for English snuffs- work quite well for German schmalzlers and snuffs. Excellent.

I'm not a massive fan of coarse-ground snuffs, but I've recently started making an exception in the case of Schmalzers, especially when I can indulge in a place where the mess doesn't matter. I resisted reviewing this particular brand as it's taken me months to work out what it is that I love about this snuff, and what it reminds me of. The answer is that there used to be a brand of chocolate in the UK when I was a kid (maybe they still make it, I'm not sure) called "Old Jamaica". Doppelt Fermentiert schmalzer has all the flavours and even the textures of this chocolate - there's rum, and dried fruit, with a deliciously cloying chocolate basenote. The tobacco used in this snuff is also exceptional, as seems to be the case with many German snuffs - the brazilian leaf they use seems ideally suited to snuff and when the more intensely christmassy flavours of the schmalzer die down, you're left with a pleasing tobacco aftertaste, a little like sniffing an empty woden cigarette case.
In common with other reviewers, my major complaint would be that this is not available in larger quantities - the 10g boxes aren't so economical, and go so quickly. Although the inferior klostermischung is available in 50g bozes and other snuffs are still available in the traditional porcelain bottles from the Bernard's website (they've got an excellent selection of handkerchiefs as well), the Gruppenfuhrer of schmalzers is still only available in tiny portions.
An expensive snuff, but you're paying for the lengthy process and years of tradition. Outstanding.

This is a unique snuff in that it is supposed to be stored in bull hides for a period of time to ferment. The flavors I get out of it most are dates and raisins with a bit of other sweetness in the background. I used to get this in 25 gram designer bottles, which made an attractive ornament for a cabinet or shelf. Sadly that doesn't seem to be the case anymore and it only seems to be available in the smaller boxes. It's still a good snuff, however. 4 stars.

All´s been said about this one and words hardly do this gem any judgement. You´ll empty the box in no time. Couldn´t possibly be any more delicious. Buy it, try it, love it.

This stuff is unbelievably delicious; it's a triumph of the snuff-makers art and goes very well indeed with a late-night mug of cocoa. I do find the grind and the moisture tricky (I'm a newbie to the sniffing world) and when I want a strong belt of the N-stuff (which is very often, I confess) this is not the snuff I'd reach for first. As a condiment to pass round after a winter feast, though, I don't see how it could be bettered.

Dark brown, coarse and medium moist, this snuff is an ideal dessert treat, with boozy tiramisu, coffee, maple syrup, dates, raisins, figs, Marsala wine and rum, followed by fragrant pot-pourri and sweet tobacco lingering in the finish. Easy to take large pinches due to the low nicotine levels and coarseness of the grind. A bit messy but very satisfying and moreish. 9/10.

Sweet schmalzler. It exploits the magic of fermentation performing the most welcomed achievement. Easy to take with a little pleasurable tobacco burn. May be clogging if overindulged. This is a very rich tobacco rendition. Interestingly delightful with a nice cup of coffee. I recommend it highly to fans of sweet tobacco.

Rich, thick and delish. This snuff goes on my tv tray along with a couple other delectables; Swiss Chocolate, Zweifacher and Hopfen. Snuffs I can pound for hours on end, calorie-free desserts, perfect with races, football and golf tourneys. Dates, figs, dark liqueurs and spices all melting into a single guiltless pleasure. Low to medium nicotine making for quick and easy finishes to the tins. A thoroughly enjoyable alternative to a fine cigar. Delicious stuff and an easy 4 plus..... just too low in nicotine to warrant a 5.

Like snuffing brown sugar. Notes of dates. figs, prunes. Nice in the nose. A tasty post nasal drip too. A bit rich for all day use but the aroma stays for quite a while. So far for schmalzlers this is my favorite. I love sweets.
