Reviews for Bernard Feinster Kownoer

My sample of this is bone dry, but other reviews have it all over the map: moist-medium-dry. I conclude from this, that this might be water based rather than oil based: an oddity in German snuffs. I suspect then that mine has dried out. I have had it about half a year now, and cannot recall how moist it was when I recieved it. Perhaps it will take to rehydration. This one was not long ago sold in glass bottles, and those would have preseved the moisture level a lot better than the current tap out boxes. Also, due to the courseness/dryness it is very sharp and does better by taking a pinch rather than sniffing directly off the hand. Even still it is likely to cause some stinging/burning. "Feinster Kownoer" means Finest from Kovno or Kaunas. Presumably this snuff is then a Lithuanian style. That may explain its significant departure in style from the rest of the Bernard range. The closest snuffs to this that I know of are the darker versions from Samuel Gawith such as Black Rappee, Princes Dark, Scotch Black. The former bottles had on them "Following a recipe from 1909. Feinster Kownoer with different tobacco places a fully matured tobacco flavor is achieved." So presumably this is a blend of several matured tobaccos. The scenting is natural: smokey, peaty wood-like. Moderatley rich, and may cause strong running and sneezing. After a rehydration attempt, I shall re-evaluate this snuff.

Tried this snuff several times for two weeks, but the off putting effect is the same as on day 1. Flavour of a pair of evil smelly feet. Sharp, sickly sweet acid. Just can“t stand it. There are far better Bernard snuffs.

Dark brown, coarsely ground and medium moist with a powerful nose burn. Certainly not a favourite of mine; the aroma is peat, coal tar, leather, ammonia, subtle geranium, and cow dung which lingers a fair while. Nicotine levels are quite high, as is the clogging effect. I have to be in the mood for this one (which isn't that often), but it may grow on me. If you enjoy Samuel Gawiths Black Rappee and London Brown, this is one for you and it is not too coarse to make sniffing difficult. 5/10.

FEINSTER KOWNOER... This stuff has a burn to it. My first hint of scent was disgusting. I felt as if my mind was searching to place the scent but simply tossed it in the junk box as if there was no where else to put it. A very good nic hit ensued. A while later, whilst picking at my nose, tobacco, glorious tobacco! Reminded me of Taxi. I thought to myself, that's somewhat of an indirect way of getting the scent I love so much. This snuff absolutely warrants further attempts. Go ahead and put this one on the natural tobacco snuff list. (may gain stars with further use)...I just gave it another star! ...edit...It's on my favorites list now. Good strong tobacco.

For me it's the strongest nic-hit at Bernard's offering. Very smoky, hints of incense and maybe geranium. Like morfiel says" It reminds me of Cope Snuff. I like it very much!

I find this tobacco to be significantly different from Bernard's schmalzlers. I do not get fermented notes, nor do I get any florals, fruit or spice. To be honest, the flavor of this one reminds me of dried Coppenhagen (dipping snuff). It has a little enjoyable burn and it is easy to take. It might be just right for the pure tobacco snuff afficionado. It is not a favorite of mine, but I found it memorable.

The scent of this tobacco is beautiful. I don't get the floral scent, and think this might just be straight tobacco. This stuff burns my nose a little and I don't use it often on that account, but it is top quality.

Another of Bernard's fine snuffs in the 14g glass bottle, this one, like the others so packed, is essentially a plain tobacco snuff, though I believe it involves several different tobaccos. According to the label the recipe dates from 1909. It is medium grind, medium dry and dark brown. While the cigar-like flavours predominate, there is also a floral note in there, possibly geranium and rose. Very nice.
