Reviews for Poschl Lowen-Prise

There are not many licorice snuffs on the market. There are plenty of anise ones, but few licorice. Löwen-Prise (Lion Pinch) has a good strong and clearly licorice flavor. Sadly, of the few licorice snuffs, even fewer are without menthol. As typical with Pöschl, they give too much menthol. One good thing is that after the initial menthol blast subsides, you are left with a nice lingering sweet licorice taste. Then it begins to creep into your throat and cause some unpleasant drippage that these waxy-mentholy Pöschl snuffs always seem to do. Its not as bad as most of them though, so I can at least say its a good snuff and not a mediocre one.

The dominant flavour here is liquorice not aniseed (you can get the difference by tasting poeschl’s own ‘ozona anis’). The Löwen-prise was my first all day snuff. I still like the different phases that are remarkable here: at first, there’s the sweet liquorice accompanied by a trace of menthol, which after a while fades into a pleasant aroma of tobacco. For me, it’s still five stars worth.

This, and Alpina, are two snuffs that I received from Poschl, just for inquiring about them. However, I was disappointed with this one. I would say it is supposed to be a liquorice flavored, rather than anise, but I can't smell the flavor after I get it in my nose. Poschl could make fine snuff, if the company wanted to, but they are going to have to fire the guy who pours the vats of menthol unto this snuff. Its also not available in the States, so I doubt I'll get it again.

Indeed this snuffs resembles the Gletscherprise quite a bit in grind, moisture and its refreshing effect. The aniseed flavour is dominating, which is a surprise. Pöschl snuffs have a tendency to be dominated by the menthol, but not here. The aniseed is very strong and of superb quality. Although I´m not a fan of licorice/aniseed, this snuff is very appealing. Typical Pöschl fluffyness, thus easy to take without any danger.

In my opinion, this is one of the cornerstone european snuffs. It's widely available, and for many eurosnuffers I'd imagine it's a beginning snuff, a little like Wilsons 99 in England(in spirit, not in flavour). I use it as a morning eye-opener, and find that the sharp menthol and warming licquorice combine well with a cup of coffee on a warm sunny terras. One element which other reviews may not have picked up on is the strong tobacco scent which comes on the back end of the Lowen-Prise. Poschl's base for this one has a leathery nuttiness which stays with me all the way to work, and is the defining element of this quality snuff. While beginners may prefer the President, or Gawith's Apricot, in my opinion, it's the Lion who'll stay with you the longest. A basic, yet subtle and enjoyable licquorice snuff which matches or beats any of the English equivalents. Especially worth trying if you're a fan of McChrystal's Anisette.

Similar to the Gleitscher Prise only with an Aniseed flavor, this is an excellent snuff! It goes very well with coffee and for some, could be considered a desert snuff. The tin is similar to Gleitscher which makes delivery very easy. If you find the Aniseed flavor is to intense, you could mix it with some Gleitscher to suit your taste. As with most Poschl products, this is very easy to take; although, I would not consider it an "all day" snuff. If you have not sampled Lowenprise, I encourage you to do so. You will not be disappointed.

A deep brown, quite fine, medium moisture snuff flavoured with liquorice and menthol. Very easy to take, and I find it is best taken as large pinches as the flavours are too subtle otherwise. The menthol overpowers the liquorice at the start; these aromas are followed by honey and finally a lingering tobacco flavour - which isn't the best I've ever experienced. Easy going for beginners and will not offend anyone, although it does cause a lot of nose run which tends to drip into my throat. Not quite as good as Ozona President, but better than many other Poschl snuffs.

Well, whoever discounts this product is missing out on a truly world class snuff. It is a bit similar to the Gleitscher prise only mixed with, say the Wilson's of Sharrows Aniseed to create an utterly FANTASTIC blend of menthol and anisette. The only thing negative that I have noticed about this product is that it tends to make me drowsy. Also, it has almost interfered with my eating schedule, due to the high menthol content. It's like eating a cough drop or brushing your teeth before a meal, great if you were looking to lose any weight or to even slow down on the sauce. I am afraid to open the lid very far at all as the more you open the lid, the more likely that the piece will detach from the container, very cool packaging though and I am proud to be using it on a daily basis. Lowenbrau is good, this is better. I highly recommend this to anyone that has the slightest inclinations towards black licorice. I could go on and on... excellent snuff,King of the Jungle and highly recommended at all costs! 4.7 Roaring nostrils

Lowen-Prise is the snuff for me. Not to much menthol, tobacco can still be tasted but it's the subtle smell of anniseed and drop which makes it a well balanced snuff for my nose. I even love the tin, looks very grand. I'm a Leo and my inicial is P...what more do you want!!! I'm happy, I have some duplicates sitting in the freezer. I LOVE SNUFF

Not one I would like to be without. I enjoy this snuff at anytime. Easy to take, does not burn in the nose, not sneezy and comes in a handy box. A good snuff for a beginner like me.

The world's biggest manufacturer of candy snuff has not done a bad job on this one, IMHO. I am by no means a fan but this at least has a bit of character to it with a nice aniseed/liqourice kick and the usual menthol. The only Poschl I could take on anything like a regular basis. And a beautiful flip top container as well.

A nice warm licorice scent but the menthol is a little too strong for me to really enjoy more than once or twice a day.

I really enjoy this one! Excellent for clearing the nose when have been on another type of snuff during the day. Not too harsh and a pleasure to use. Always keep one of these in my drawer at work, with the pack being easy to use for putting a measure on the back of the hand, which is a change for me, as I generally use a snuff box and take a pinch with finger and thumb from this.

A very good snuff. Licorice not Anise. The menthol overpowers the subtle licorice though. I wish it had a more eucalyptus menthol like Ozona President, but I may not know better. If you like the other semi-sweet Mentholatum's from Poschl then do try.

the lowewnprise is a piece of beauty. it comes in a wonderfully old-fashioned looking box in brown and gold, with a lion (german "loewe" is "lion") on it. great. the box is different from the normal poeschl design. another good thing is, that it is easy to open and refill the box, so you also get a very convenient snuff-box. it is fine ground and quite moist, but does not clump. well done i would say. the menthol is strong and refreshing. it is the cool kind of menthol, that feels cold in the nose. good. initially there is only menthol and licorice, the licorice being a bit sweeter than in the westfalenprise, which is also licorice scented. after a while the menthol goes away and a nice tobaccoish taste comes and entertains the nose. very satisfying. it is a ruther runny and sneezy tobacco, which i personally like with this blend. among the best three poeschl's.
