Reviews for Wilsons of Sharrow Camphor & Mild

A good change of pace for lovers of menthol. With a somewhat sharp tobacco base (stems) the hit is very rewarding. Clearly camphor with a hint of bergamot. This does cause my sinuses to swell a little, the camphor does. The contrast between the deep camphor note and the light tobacco base makes for a well rounded snuff I'd say.

I got a new tub of this and it is changed from the last one. There seems to be a small amount of menthol in it and less camphor. I wonder if the price of camphor is going up. I still like it, but a little less than I did before. Thanks for the review that got me to try this Bro. Paul. Snuffing this made me realize that this is the better half of O&G. Camphor almost has a minty, turpentine, evergreen odor to it, which smells better than it sounds. I love it

At first I was really impressed by the old-timey flavor. But this doesn't age well, after it dries it becomes very similar to an SP, which I don't care for. For camphor, since I'm a menthol fan, make mine S. M. Blue.

Truth in labelling strikes again. A mild snuff with camphor. It's a VERY easy snuff, an excellent introduction to newbies. I can take whole whopping fingerfuls of this baby without discomfort. I can't say I notice much of a nic-hit here, but I'm not left fidgeting for my can of Rooster, either. The snuff equivalent of an "extra light" cigarette, but healthier and more pleasurable. The camphor really adds a distinct pleasantness, a certain piney dampness in the nostrils, and even though I'm not a menthol-hater (my "go-to" snuff these days is Hedges L260), even I find it nice to have the piney, medicinal notes of camphor without it being upstaged by searing menthol. I find myself tempted to get a drum of this - it may not be as gratutiously excellent as some other snuffs, but I could pinch this for hours at a time. I tend to fault snuffs for being too milquetoast (Dholakia Cola Champagne, Toque Spanish Gem), but in this case, it really, really works out nicely - probably because it's not really trying to be flavorful. It's just a mild snuff. With, you know, camphor.

I was intrigued by this snuff because I heard that it was the only camphor snuff without menthol. When first taking it, the scent was very familar, so I instinctively braced myself for the freezing pain of menthol and.....nothing! Just a nice scent! Then comes on a wonderful gentle lift remiscent of Wilson's fine SPs. This snuff is so refreshing, both in its gentle pleasant lifting character, and for the fact that it has no menthol! If there are any other scents here, there could be a little pine and a little citrus, but because of this snuff I have learned to love camphor for itself. Excellent!

A lot softer than I´d expected. The camphor is really very mild and the tobacco´s not especially strong, either. There´s the slightest hint of citrus and something floral, but overall this one´s rather Mild & Camphor. Unimpressive, but pleasant to take and a bit cooling. EDIT: Getting alot better after some time of using it, but still can´t beat GH Camphor Menthol or Rumney´s Export imo. Still, if you totally loath menthol and love camphor this one here is the top choice.

I've never been able to work out what the "mild" in this snuff's name refers to. It could be the base tobacco, which seems muted and soft, or it may be the mild hint of citrus, and generally milder flavourings which accompany the camphor. The camphor cools the nose and brings a pleasingly medicinal quality, like mothballs and liniment: it's one of those things that you just don't smell as often as you used to, but it's unmistakable when you do. The grind is mildly medium and smooth, and C&M represents a kind of mid-point between SP snuffs and the Medicateds. There are definite (mild) hints of lavender and citrus, which linger as the camphor begins to dissipate. It's mildly cooling, mildly refreshing, and I can imagine many people using it as an all-day snuff.

Excellent camphorated snuff, the Sharrow version of medicated 99.

Camphor, for me, is what makes some mentholated snuffs not only palatable but positively good. To have a snuff in which the prime flavouring is camphor without the menthol takes the notion a step beyond. Not that camphor is the sole flavour in this snuff as there is also a distinct and long lasting background of bergamot, making this a truly excellent snuff. It's fairly fluffy and light and a breeze to take in even large pinches. A must have for any collection I reckon.

Wilsons’ Camphor & Mild is a decent snuff with the typical good quality of Wilsons of Sharrow. Admittedly, I acquired my tin hoping that it was yet another of their excellent medicated snuffs. I was wrong, but not disappointed. Whereas I cannot find the cooling effect of menthol in it, I found an interesting blend. To me, its flavor is that of an elegant SP with a hint (but not the cooling acuteness) of camphor. It has an excellent grind/moisture combination. It is easy to take with a very little nose bite. It satisfies. I recommend this snuff to SP fans. Menthol fans: this is not medicated, but it is good.

This is a splendid snuff. The camphor isn't ruined with menthol like most other camphor snuffs. This one is just camphor and nothing else. It cools the nose just slightly, enough to notice, but no more. Recommended for anyone who loves camphor, but doesn't want the menthol blast that usually comes with it.

Medium brown, medium grind and quite dry to medium moisture. A pleasant non-mentholated, easy to take snuff, with a subtle aroma of camphor combined with bergamot and a slightly fragrant finish similar to Wilsons Strasbourg. An all day, everyday snuff if ever there was one. Well worth trying. 9/10.

Too kind, Snuff Head... Can't really add much more to the above review, but, I have been using C & M for years, usually buying in a 1lb at a time, however, I must admit that the blend does not seem to be quite as 'right' as it used to be. With this in mind, I would suggest that this is one of those snuffs you will either take to or not... So, give it a go and see how you get on with it.

Dark Brown Moist, A Pleasant Camphor, Not Overdone. This was discontinued some time ago but just been rekindled, thanks to Brother Paul!
