Reviews for Wilsons of Sharrow Best SP

This was one of the first I tried, and it has remained one of my favorites since then. I really like the bergamot scent, and the subtle, rounded tobacco scent coming through after a little while. It forms the backbone of my snuffs together with my American Scotches. A good all day snuff, and my only point of minor criticism is that the scent is not very long lasting, even when fresh. But I really love this, and never tire of it! Well done!

There's not much to add to the reviews below, except to reiterate that this is a perfect, lighter SP. Suprisingly, the bergamot and light, high quality tobacco base seem to last at least as long in the nose as the spicier, darker Tom Buck. A great warm weather snuff, and one of the least clogging snuffs I've ever used.

Oh my, I´m shoving this up, like there´s no tomorrow. Perfect balance between bergamot, citrus and splendid tobacco. This snuff´s got a very long tradition and it shows. Well, there´s some competition at the SP section and very few are just as good as the Best SP, but none better. Due to the drieness (maybe) a little caution has to be applied at sniffing it. 5 stars without the slightest doubt.

The first SP I tried. I liked it a lot at first, in fact the first time i sniffed it I stopped for a sec and said.. "wow, this is really good!". This was the snuff that made me decide I could use snuff to stop smoking. Did the trick. Since then, I've found other SPs that I think may be slightly better, but there was never anything wrong with Best SP, and I'd not have any problems using it again.

Bottom Mill Snuff: Ive put this here for lack of a category and because I'm not sure its made anymore. Ive just found this inm,my collection and its obviously those wags at WoS version of Top Mill. A darkish, plain tobacco SP, very similar to best. Actually, knowing their tendency to label the same snuff twice it probably is best SP......

An OK SP overall. When I first opened my tin it was quite moist but it dried quickly. It changes as it dries. It gets harsher and much more burn. The scent goes from vary strong slightly furniture polish type to a harsh citrus. Best dark and grand cairo is much better.

This one surely is a classic, though I don't think its Wilson's "Best" even though it is named as such. I prefer Tom Buck or Queen's Extra, which are also SPs and all three are quite similar. This one is lighter than the other two though, and is somewhat more refreshing. It also gives a better nose clearing effect. The bergamot and light floral scent are complimentary. So if you want stong character or flavor in your SP, go with Tom Buck. If you want a more airy refreshing sniff, go with Best.

All of the above for sure....my personal assesment though is bright bergamont at the onset......but somehow bitter in the back of my throat soon after.....this snuff seems to always go there no matter how careful I sniff......it's easy to take and is always satisfying.......on the initial sniff one realizes why this particular recipe has been around as long as it has.......it's a brilliant merge of texture and flavor and tobacco....highly recommended.....an all day snuff for me as well

Mid brown, medium ground and quite dry. The first pinch has very obvious orange and lemon rind flavours, whilst a second pinch reveals plenty of bergamot (like a good cup of Earl Grey). Nicotine low to medium. My sample has come in one of those terrible 5g tins and may be drier than it should be. I will not purchase a bigger tin because I can't see myself using this snuff a great deal (I find it sneezy and it hits the back of my throat too often, very much like McChrystals S'nuff). Samual Gawith SP no 1 High Mill is in my opinion superior, as it is easier to take and has a better tobacco base.

Wilsons claim this as being their bestseller for more than 250 years. The earliest versions must have been different (tobacco came from the American colonies - not Zimbabwe), but it can’t be fortuitous that it has remained so popular for so many years. This is a particularly happy marriage between natural tobacco flavours and the citrus of bergamot (Citrus Bergamia)from Reggio-Colabria in Italy, which is a cross between pear lemon and the Seville orange. There is also a pleasant hint of lavender. This, for me at least, is the distinctive taste of Sharrow snuff and it is found in varied degrees and combinations in several other offerings by Wilsons. S.P 100 is similar but with a slightly finer grind. Both are highly recommended.

One of my all time favourites, Wilson's Best SP is one that I buy in bulk. I'm sure it tastes better that way and it certainly keeps very well in the airtight plastic tubs, far better than in the smaller tins. A great tobacco base with wonderful bergamot/citrus flavouring, it never fails to please. Medium-fine grind, medium moisture and mid to light brown colour. A real classic. No wonder it's been in production for close to 300 years.

On first taking a pinch of Best SP, I get a nice spray of bergamot and citrus. This tapers off pretty fast, making way for warm tobacco flavors accompanied by a hint of lavender. A refreshing, clean snuff.

Great all day citrusy snuff. Toque original has displaced this as my favorite SP, but this is the classic SP scent.

Well this was my first taste of an SP snuff and i must say i'm now a fan! Upon opening the tin i was greeted by the scent of tobacco mixed with a soft citrus aroma. The tobacco is much more finely ground and dryer than any of the other snuffs i have used previously so my first pinch went straight to the back of my throat. My second attempt however was much more successful! I was surprised by how strong the citrus flavour was in the nose however it does not overpower the base tobacco. This snuff left me feeling refreshed and did not clog up my nasal passages. Overall with a bit of practice on dealing with the finer grind i can easily see this becoming a good everyday snuff.

The grand-daddy of SP snuffs. This is apparently Wilson's best selling snuff and has been manufactured since the 1700's. Its not hard to see why as it is, quite simply, the perfect SP; full of citrus top notes and a good plain tobacco base flavour. A snuiff that you can take all day, every day as snuffers have been doing for hundreds of years.

I'm getting to the bottom of a large tin of this, that I've had for some time. It has a strong tobacco taste with citrus. It is not my favourite snuff, tends to hid the back of my throat.

Complex flavors of Rose, Lavender, and citrus. A little cloying in the nose but that's SP for me. Not called SP Best for nothing though. A very enjoyable snuff.

Wilsons Best SP I’m not sure if the would be recommended by long term snuff enthusiasts, but in my opinion it’s very good. It’s a nice gradual step up toward snuff that has more tobacco in it that can be detected. Plus I love the hint of citrus. The citrus does not overpower the tobacco taste. It’s a very delightful balance between the tobacco and citrus. It’s a little drier then I’m use to, but I’m enjoying it just the same.

Similar to Tom Buck and its a great SP but compared to Mr. Buck it takes second place,My experience has been its always much drier than T.B. and it always hits the back of my throat, crushing a dandelion leaf and putting it in the tin for a while helps moisten it up a bit,but when the mood strikes for a SP I will normally go for Tom buck instead.
