The best snuff I've had to date, Spanish Gem is right up my alley. Its a finer snuff with a nice nicotine content, but its really easy for me to take. The flavor is very complex, but balanced to perfection. I get the following notes from the flavor: Honey, vanilla bean, white chocolate, chamomile flowers, and even a bit of nutty flavor like pistachio or almond. The best thing to me about this snuff is every minute it is in your nose it seems to shift scents and you catch something you didn't catch the last time you breathed in. I do not detect any citrus like some other comments hinted on, but the flavors I do detect are fine with me. I can't stop using this one, had to order a 100g bag of it after getting the 10 can sampler and falling in love with this stuff.

This is a very strange snuff. Every time I smell it and I think I know what it is or is going to smell like and I try it later I'm wrong.
and if ever there was a review that is 'subject to change without warning' its this one, because the very snuff itself seems that way ('subject to change without warning')
At first I really didn't think I liked this one,
I have been sure at times especially at first that this had "the SP thing" in it (see my other reviews of TOque Original and extra SP) but then other times I sniff it and I think its completely different, maybe its got chocolate in it (in fact today is one of the days I think that's very likely so.. its too bad I no longer have some actual Toque Chocolate handy to sniff first then this right after) because that's the thing this is like "Chameleon Snuff" and I find a really fun and interesting thing to do with this snuff when I remember I have it and get it out to try this is, even more than other snuffs is to have something else, some other snuff first and then follow it with some of *this*
Right now I even think it might be a kind of a toast type hidden in there under whatever all it is and today and this minute anyway, I like it..for now, today.
I haven't decided if I will get this one again or not, but I might (this one just tends to get unfairly overlooked stored and lumped in with the Toque SPs and other things I have to finish up but I know I wont get again which isn't fair to this one)
5 stars.. (today anyway!)

It speaks for just what a truly excellent company Toque is that a snuff like this is probably their weakest offering. The big problem here, I find, is the flavor - or lack thereof. Describing it as "Quit with honey" is quite helpful, as before I read that description I couldn't pinpoint a flavor of any sort - but, yes, there are faint hints of honey for the first minute or so after snuffing. After that... nothing. I don't think the problem is a "stale" tin, as the tin I have is still rather dark and moist. It's just so subtle, so bland as to be entirely non-existent. Subtlety is fine, but there's a firm line between "subtle with" and "lack of", and I find this snuff to exist far from that line, deep in the neighborhood of "lack of". I suppose if one goes on a flavor-finding safari, one can return to base camp with results - as a lot of people have. But I just can't help but find the practice of Scent Safaring for a scent as elusive as this to be rather futile and pointless - at a certain point, one might as well just completely cede to one's imagination. The rest of Toque's line, even Natural and the "classic" original fruits, all have very distinct, lingering flavors - but this Spanish Gem is the olfactory equivalent of a polar bear blinking in a blizzard. Take it if you want a snuff without a smell, as the mechanics are all fine and the nicotine exists - but as for me, I'd rather a snuff be as painful as a scotch, as horrid-smelling as a rotting skunk, and as lingering as Dholakia's "Roasted Nut" than as milquetoast and forgettable as this.

Spanish Gem is not Spanish Jewel. The only thing I they have in common is a bit of honey. Personally, I have to show a little pride here as the name of this snuff was my own suggestion to the Toque company. It really needed to be differentiated from SJ. It was created as an imitation of Spanish Jewel and evolved into a tribute to it. Now, instead of saying it is a pale imitation of the legendary Spanish Jewel, lets forget all about this SJ snuff and just discuss this as the next great Toque snuff and talk about it as if it were its own unique blend.
Are you with me? Good. This is an outstanding snuff in its own right. Forget about what its prenteding to be. The logos of Toque snuff have a pattern, this one shows the Spanish flag. Lets think of Spain and Spanish Jewel more as "inspiration" and nothing more. This snuff presents many of thee typical characteristics of the best snuff from Toque. It has their standard base, but the flavor is much more complex. There is a strong sweetness, which upon analysis is clearly some very good honey. I hear there is a bit of brandy in here too. I think I taste some chocolate and vanilla. I doubt if I can place every flavor here, there may be some spices. That's all fine. What is imprortant is that this is a very complex snuff that is both more and also less than its name indicates. I say this becuase there is a lot going on here beyond honey flavors and good tobacco. I wish it was not trying to imitate something that it is not; not even close to being. Remember, this snuff is fantastic for what it is. Just plain good! If anything this 100g bulk I purchaced will mature well. I think an aged and fermented tobacco would do wonders for what I already consider a 5 star snuff. If Roderick of Toque is working on that now, I guess I have a few years to wait. :-\

Nothing dramatic added to the ultra-clean Toque base with which I'm familiar, but there's something fascinating there, a back note which reminds me of fine leather, saddle soap and expensive horses. If anything, the taste errs on the side of subtlety and is rather short lived, but given how lovely and elusive this is, that's not a bad thing, as it lends itself to repeated pinches. As with all Toques I've tried, must be open for at least 24 hours before it begins to show it's character. Slightly above medium nicotine. UPDATE: After being opened for 5 days, this snuff developed considerable depth and complexity; I found it quite good initially, but now it's simply amazing. I can't think of anything else that has this snuff's character. The subtle, elusively sweet flavor lingers, but never cloys. Almost pure very high-grade tobacco, but the backnotes seem infinitely deep, clean and refreshing. All I can think of is saddle soap, fine leather, sunshine and warm spring air. Upgrade to 5 stars. Simply amazing!

Simply superb. The Toque base combined with a honey and numerous other flavors. Just keeps growing on me and lingers in the nose.
Almost like chocolate, calling it Spanish Gem there is no hint to the ingredients.
I found it easy to take, has that perfect Toque consistency.

Almost every toque seems to be a hit, but the Spanish gem surely is an evergreen. As already mentioned, it’s impossible to describe its sweet and complex aroma. This is a high-class snuff everyone should try.

Brown, fine and dry, it can be a bit tricky to take. It hits the throat pretty easy if inhaled too hard, but very nice when done right. The tobacco smell dominates the taste, and there's also a sweet, fudge-like scent in the background. Very pleasant, it's one of my daily snuffs.

Tried to get to the core of this snuff, but haven´t succeeded so far. Tremendously complex and the interchange between the outstanding base tobacco and the different (?) flavours makes it quite a task. I´m not even sure if there´s more in there than the honey, but the result is fantastic and puzzling. The best way to enjoy this snuff is stop wondering and let it unfold its marvelous, soothing effect upon sniffing.

Oh god, I love this snuff. How does Roderick do it? I sure it has to do with the base tobacco. If you have had Toque Natural it is really a great base. This is easily an all day snuff for me. I can't figure out the complex flavors I am tasting, but one thing is for sure, I want more and more. Buy this one in bulk.

This is a very interesting snuff. As others have mentioned, there are hints of several different flavors. One flavor that stands out for me is citrus. I often add some St. Clements to enhance the citrus flavor (plus I like oranges) :>) This is not an everyday snuff for me; however, defiantly has a place in my collection. I tend to enjoy the Gem in the early evening hours. For me, it's to complex for early in the day. I've also used it after dinner with relaxing results.

Initially, I liked this snuff a good deal. It's been compared, below, to Quit with honey and, since Quit is excellent and the honey that Toque produces - in W&H, for instance - is also excellent, then this is a compliment. My first impressions were that it was right to be so complimented: it punches somewhat above the standard non-toast Toque in terms of nicotine and certainly there's a pleasant honeyed strand to the taste and aroma. The flavour is a complex one, though, and elusive; hunting around for associations I come up with Marzipan and Playdoh, but there's much more there besides that - a faint Juniper, perhaps? Something slightly medicinal? The faintest hint of Roquefort? Nutmeg? Brandy? Well, it's one to keep me guessing, anyway. This mysterious complex of tastes fades fairly slowly and, as it fades - for me at least - one single background note emerges - from out of nowhere - persists as everything else fades and eventually takes its place as the sole strong, and quite remarkably enduring finishing tone - and I've absolutely no idea what it is. Perhaps this is the Wintergreen that has been written of below? I don't know. But whatever this prolonged note is I'm not absolutely sure - after only one day of sniffing, it's true - if it's one that I'm sure sits that well with me. So for me, intriguing as it is, the jury's still out on this one.

For me this is simply honey flavored Toque Quit. The scent definitely makes it easier to take more lustfully. Nice, sweet honey that clears cleanly with no lingering or cloying. Otherwise very plain like Toque Quit. Sadly, this snuff is nothing like the Spanish Jewel that it is named in tribute of.

This is a really great snuff; deeply flavourful and satisfying. The taste is complex and obviously, from looking at the other reviews, we all find different facets in that complexity. I don't get any cheese or honey as seems to be common, or any similarity to US snuffs. However, I was surprised with what I did get; the lingering taste slowly but surely turned into a slight but definate aroma of wintergreen. The interesting thing about snuff, like wine, is that the flavours you get are not necessarily anywhere near the actual ingredients, it is also different things to different pallates. This is a must for any collection, you might not use it all day long, but you will use it often if you are serious snuff taker.

well this one is so different the only way to do it is short and blunt; straight tobacco, fruity, sweet (almost like and American sweet or whiskey and honey), cheesy, and probably something else too all at the same time.
One thing i have to point out that i noticed is that i also just recently tried the new Dholakia wine and cheese which i don't really care for but i do notice a remarkable similarity between it and the gem. the w&c is kinda like Spanish gem gone all wrong.

Orange brown, finely ground with medium moisture. An initially complex snuff with hints of cocoa, citrus, spice, fudge and honey. Quite sweet and with very little burn, so easy to take. The nicotine levels are above average. Subtle flavour lingers for a long time and although it is an easy and pleasant snuff to take, I don't find it that memorable.

A jewel among snuffs! It seems only fitting to present my thoughts on this superb snuff as my 200th snuff review on this site. Spanish Gem is delight from opening the tin though the sniffing and to the final blow of the nose. The moment the tin is opened you smell a strong and wonderfully honey-laden tobacco scent which only gets better once sniffed. The flavour is remarkably complex. The honey appears to be quite natural though I couldn't say what sort of honey it is. There seems to be an underlying fruitiness as well, though I can detect none of the cheesy sock odour that others have commented on. There is a touch of tartness to the flavour which I find offsets the honey perfectly. I also detect a certain "fustiness" (for want of a better word) that I think works very well with the honey and tobacco. While relatively easy to take on account of the moisture level, the Gem does have a decent burn to it and it certainly satisfies my nicotine needs. I suspect that if it were allowed to dry out it would be really rather sneezy! The flavour is a good stayer, lingering even beyond a hearty blow of the nose. Toque's Spanish Gem easily scores a 6 on my scale of 1 to 5 snuff boxes.

I find Spanish Gem an easy snuff to take, fine ground with slight moisture with a rather complex nose, slight cheesy spicy sweetness to it leaving me with a feeling of well being. Another hit Roderick.
