Reviews for Samuel Gawith Mandarin

A delicious and unique snuff. No confusion here, this is most definitely the smell of a mandarin orange. While I am loathe to contradict ermtony, I'm rather sure that this is, in fact, a mentholated snuff. The menthol is gentle and compliments the mandarin quite well, certainly not a heavy-handed "fruit and menthol" like, say, Ozona - but the smell of a mandarin orange alone does not cool the nose the way this does. If not menthol, then definitely neroli oil. Regardless of what causes the nasal cool, it's an utterly pleasant, very refreshing snuff. Its closest relatives would be Toque's St. Clements, Wilsons' Tangerine, and Ozona's Orange - this is definitely the winner of the lot (though in all fairness, mandarin oranges are far better than tangerines or regular oranges, so SG has a head start in this race). Mandarin is much more refreshing than St. Clements, and without the initial burn; much sweeter and longer lasting in flavor than Tangerine; and both stronger in flavor and less synthetic (not to mention a lot more nuanced with the "menthol") than Ozona Orange. Another underrated, underground, fruity sleeper hit from Samuel Gawith.

The base for this snuff seems to be very similar to the SP Scotch from the same company. It is similarly medium-fine and relatively dry and the colour is light brown. Like the SP Scotch the citrus flavouring is understated rather than overwhelming and this is no bad thing. The main difference between them is the nature of the flavouring. While the SP Scotch is scented with bergamot the Mandarin, not unexpectedly, is scented with mandarin oranges, or at least with some extract of them. The result is really rather good even if the scent is not so long lasting in the nose. The big plus of course is that there is no menthol in this snuff!
