Reviews for Wilsons of Sharrow Irish High Toast 22

Hitherto, my favourite toast was F&T's HDT (with Sam Gawith's Irish D alongside it); so it's appropriate to compare it with that. Not quite as fine or dry (i.e., not quite as dusty) as F&T's HDT, this is in the same league; which is to say, it's marvellous! For me, there's a tendency to the dripping nose when I use it -- but that's most likely exacerbated because of the amount I try to get up there (I'm going for a world record in No.22 greediness, I think!). Short of penning a panegyric (which is a possibility with this one), there's little else to be said than that, if you like toasts, you're likely to fall in love with IHT22. Simply, it's very, very difficult not to take more once I've started. And that's an accolade I reserve only for what I consider to be the elite among snuffs.

Great snuff we have here. Toasted to perfection with an excellent tobacco base. A tin of this will always be on my shelf.

IMHO this is a slightly more "buttery" toast compared to a F&T HDT. Reviews for either snuff should be very similar. About the only thing that would sway me more to the F&T is the tin. Hints of leather, wood, and deep tobacco. Enjoyable as an all-day snuff. It is fun to sniff.

Very light brown, and fine like the Americans but not in flavor. It has what would I would call a nut and vanilla combination with a smoky back note with a modicum of caramel. Easily an all day snuff for me.

Wow, what a brilliant flavour. Very amazing! Like betonente mentioned, it reminds me of Black Forest ham, as well. Deep, smokey, nutty, light caramel, just lovely. A very pronounced HDT, compared to the Samuel Gawith ones with their different, high qualities. With a little caution it isn´t too hard to take. A snuff to buy in bulks.

I recently started using nasal snuff and kept thinking, "This isn't what I thought it would be like." That is until I tried Wilsons IHT. When I snuffed it I said to myself,"this is it. This is what I expected and what I've been looking for." After all the wimpy snuffs I tried I did way too big a pinch, and so I had to wait for my eyes to quit watering, but this is the way a snuff should taste and feel. Not for early mornings or empty stomachs, but really nice after a big meal or late in the day when after many tokes all the other snuffs feel like your putting flour up your nose.PS: this will clear your sinuses even better than a medicated snuff

I do enjoy this snuff, however, I find it reminds me of Rooster. It's quite pale, and very finely ground. Before insufflating, it smells somewhat of nuts, but once it gets in my nose, it takes on a lightly smokey scent. To me, it's like a more subdued version of Rooster. Rather then smelling of hickory and mesquite (ie BBQ sauce), it smells lightly of smoke, kind of like a campfire from a distance. I enjoy it, but I do prefer the citrus notes I get from the I.D.H. #20. In its favour, I find this snuff surprisingly easy to take, considering how dry and finely ground it is. I was surprised at how infrequent it was for any of it to hit my throat at all. It's quite pleasant, and I'll keep a tin handy, but this probably isn't going to be one of my main snuffs.

Possibly the best plain toast out there. It is light in colour, finely milled, has a nice nicotine kick and has a wonderful nutty, buttery flavour that lasts for quite a while. I find that I even prefer it to F&T HDT which was my previous favourite toast. I can detect a hint of sweetness to the finish, but alas, no bacon. A top drawer snuff that I wouldn't want to be without.

I have been taking snuff on and off, mosty on, for the better part of thirty years, but mainly used the poeschl stuff, fruity wilsons, and good old American scotch. Thinking it was about time to use more "grown up" snuff, I got some of this along with Dholokia Sparrow, and Molens Latakia. WOW is all I can say; I am a fool for waiting so long for this very very nice toast! It ever took some practice for me not to over snuff, but even then the tobacco shop aroma comes in on a heavenly note. I have'nt yet got the bacon thing and that would be great, but currently I am really enjoying this blond, fine and dry toasty product. Saint Nic is just stout enough and very soothing. This just may be my everyday toot. HIGHLY recommended.

I do get the smoked meat note on this now, but that's after my tin sat for about six months in my drawer. I think it's very good. Some days I have a difficult time deciding whether it's really the same as F&T's HDT with just batch-to-batch variations or whether it's really a different snuff. I don't have enough of either to know. I get more saddle shop sawdust and leather from HDT and more smoked-meat or barbecue essence from #22. Both are excellent five star toasts, you won't go wrong with either of these. Any English toast fan should have a tin of each on hand.

This was my first toast style snuff. I've had a few others but come back to this one. It has a wonderful "toasted" flavor. Simple, soft, but full. No gimmicky pefumes are needed to enjoy the richness of this one. It also has a nice nicotine lift, and is very dry and smooth. Its not entirely suitbable for a beginner, but an advanced beginner could handle it and an intermediate will love it. Hurry up and graduate so that you can enjoy this one!

This snuff is a nice and clean high toast. It is very fine, so it requires a little practice to take properly. It is very enjoyable, providing little nose burn and plenty of pure tobacco toast flavor (slightly smoky and nutty). Agreeing with sandy130674, it can be a little clogging after repeated takings. I recommend it to the unflavored-tobacco snuff fan.

Buff in colour, not too sneezy and with some burn. Smoked oak, caramel, biscuity, nutty and some sweetness. Good nicotine. A satisfying evening pinch with wine or whisky, this is an excellent straightforward example of the style which could be enjoyed by a novice (just take small pinches). Very similar to the F&T High Dry Toast, but perhaps slightly less finely ground and certainly more economical. My favourite toast and highly recommended. 10/10.

I’m surprised that Wilsons don’t fill the distinctive tall tins of Fribourg & Treyer with no.22 to sell at considerably greater cost as the original Fribourg & Treyer used to do with Samuel Gawith’s Irish Dry Light. This is the only genuine toast offered by Wilsons and, unlike Fribourg & Treyer’s High Dry Toast, seems consistent in quality. It is also cheaper. Light biscuit in colour, it is an extremely pungent natural snuff with a smoky flavour. Owing to its fineness it is not recommended to the novice.

This is a fine, velvety snuff with an appealing tan color like freshly-sanded wood. Though light, when taken gently, IHT No. 22 is easy on the nose. I don't get the bacon scent a lot of people mention. Rather, I smell toasted tobacco and smoky straw balanced by a hint of honey. A perfect all-day snuff, satisfying and flavorful, this is a regular in my rotation.

I'm revising my review since I've had the chance to get used to this snuff (and since I was only a beginner at the time.) At first it was a little odd with all of the toasty flavor and took a while for me to learn to take it correctly, but once I did, I found I liked it more and more. It has a nice, mild toast flavor and a moderate amount of nicotine. I've been using it so much, I actually got burned out on it for a while, but I'll pick it back up later on.

Lovely stuff! Light in colour, finely milled and very toasty. Possibly my favourite high toast. It has a lovely lingering scent which reminds me of caramel.

Easy to over sniff, but worth getting it right. I got the smoky bacon flavour crisps reference of earlier reviewers but it is very faint and there are other notes, like the smell you get from old pianos. It is also a bit like finely ground cigarette tobacco. Yes, you say, because that is what it is, but it is the first one that I have tried that actually smells like it! I like it.

I just tried it for the first time, and this is only my second day of snuffing, but I do like it. It reminds me of the scent of a bee hive. My father was a beekeeper when I was a kid and it smells like a beehive. I don't know if it is because you have to smoke the beehive to calm down the bees. That may be it.

What a lovely snuff. Taken carefully the flavour hits the right spot and lingers delightfully. As I haven't yet used any of the other 'toasts' on the market I can't compare. A treat to savour when relaxing.

This is a very good snuff indeed and one of a handful that I come back to time and time again. There is somehow a deeper complexity to this than the usual smoky toast; I can't be any more specifc than it has a certain kind of sweet tang to it. I've read several comments to the effect that it tastes of Bacon, but I don't get this (or its not the Bacon I'm familiar with!) A real keeper.

this is BB heaven to me. latakia like, but more spicey and has a "lighter" note. where latakia smells more like ashes (very very tasty ashes) this smells like burning coal. and the great part is: there is a distinct bacon note. this is bacon. the grind is very fine, dust like. the colour is exceptional in that it is very light tan, nearly yellow. a "blonde" tobacco. i experimented with moistening this, as the grind is too fine and moisture too low for me. this does NOT work. it gets stall and loses the lovely bacon scent.

This snuff is a mainstay. The golden color mentioned earlier is not present in the latest edition of this snuff. Still wothy snuff, but darker in color and a tad smokier than in the past.

I quite like this one, but I like the F&T HDT better. This one is nice mixed 50/50 with Royal George.

Very enjoyable and one I reach for when I take a break from the scotch snuffs. Has a good toasty base thats smooth and completely satisfies if taken in larger pinches.

This is one of my favorite snuffs! It is very dry and fine so you have to be careful as it is really easy to sniff it to far up your nose. The tobacco is very flavorful and rich. The color is a blonde which isn't very common. I love this stuff a lot and really recommend it if you can handle fine, dry, snuffs.
