Reviews for Wilsons of Sharrow Irish D High Toast No. 20

The light toast of this brings out the depth and character of the tobacco, but its not so toasted as to actually taste like the dry toast #22. Added into it the bergamot and lemon makes this stand far apart from #22. This is the best of the SP variations that I've tried and one I never want to be without.

Medium brown, finely ground, medium moist and sampled fresh from the mill. Some describe this snuff as being toasted, and you'd certainly think this based on the name. But the name is misleading. I detect no evidence of a toasted tobacco base, but instead a hefty, citrus (bergamot and lemon) aroma, mild tobacco and a good nicotine punch. An excellent SP, which stands out from other Wilsons SPs by the high level of citrus flavouring. Along with their SS, this is my favourite of the style. 10/10.

Irish D.H. Toast No. 20 has a somewhat misleading name. Many snuffers may fall in love with the Irish High Tost No. 22 and think this is a variation of the same. It is not. This is lightly toasted SP snuff, with a strong bergamot character. Its texture is not as fine as the #22, but is finer than than Best SP. I think the bergamot in this is stronger than Best SP, and close to that of Tom Buck. It has excellent sinus clearing and uplifiting properties, and could easily be an all day snuff for me.

When I first tried this amazing snuff, I thought it would be a subtle variation on the fantastic WoS #22 High Dry Toast. It's not. Irish D High Toast #20 is actually a very lemony, SP style with an impeccably blended, velvety fine, soft tobacco base, and a very long lived, but subtle, toasted citrus finish. Not as "dusty" or earthy as McChrystal's Mild Lemon and easier to take because of its slightly higher moisture content, #20 is also much less toasty and more citrusy than the Toque Fruit Toasts. This is one of the very best SP style snuffs I've had, surpassing even the famous Wilson's Best SP and Tom Bucks in my view. A hidden treasure that's good enough for special occasions, and elegant and subtle enough for all day, every day use. I can't sing the praises of this snuff highly enough.

Very fine and dry like the Americans, but with a subtle scent that would make it an easy all day snuff. It's a snuff that I would order again though not as often as some others.

Finer and drier than the Frederick Tranter #20, but most of all, the tobacco base is all different. The flavouring´s quite clearly a soft, delicious SP, but the tobacco flavour is very pronounced and delicious. It´s much more recignizeable as a toasted tobacco. Although being different, it´s just as easy to take. Not to be mistaken with the pale, dry, fine HDT´s. This is one of the very best Wilson´s imo (better than the Frederick Tranter version, too).

I have no doubt that the IHT No. 20 is a toasted SP, probably a toasted version of Best SP or SP100. It's another one I like to buy in bulk, both for freshness and because I seem to shift a lot of it! It's of medium-fine grind and medium moisture, so not really a high dry toast at all. Whatever the classification it's a wonderful treat for the nose. The bergamot/citrus flavouring is clear and refreshing and I find this is a great snuff for clearing the nose and sinuses.

Wilson's Irish D. H. Toast #20 is an interesting snuff, especially if you like SPs. It's supposed to be a toasted version of Best SP but it's hard to tell. I'll compare this with Best SP since most people are familiar with that blend. #20 is very slightly lighter in color than Best SP, more finely and more uniformly ground, and moister. It also has a deeper, richer flavor. I find it altogether more pleasant than Best SP and this could certainly replace it and you wouldn't miss Best SP at all. I think it comes down to whether you like an SP to be moist and rich and fine, or a little drier, lighter, and medium/finely ground. I think this version wins out on all counts not the least of which that it addresses the complaint many people have with Best SP, namely, that Best SP goes too far back. The additional moisture in #20 more than offsets the finer grind making it easy to take. Nicotine is on the high side of medium, but my tin is very fresh, straight from the mill. I don't care for SP very much but this is a very good example. I enjoy it almost as much as SG's SP. No. 1 High Mill. Therefore I'll give it four stars.
