Sheffield Exchange lists the flavorings in this as Violets, Geranium bourbon, Lemon, May Blossom, Tonquin Essence, Musk. This snuff, however, is more than the sum of its parts. There is not much I can say that the other great reviews below do not. It is without a doubt an excellent snuff of majesty but at the same time decadent and sensual. I love to take one of these late at night sipping fine whiskey and reading an old book. There is a bit of a pungent sting with this one, more so than my most beloevd Morlaix, but the flavor lasts a long time. I get a hint of smoke in there as well. Top notch!

On of the first snuffs I tried and by far one of my most favorite! I just love the floral/musky smell of this snuff. F&T is the best!

I've been reluctant to attempt a review of an F&T snuff because all of them involve what I would call "proprietary scents." Which is to say, the character of the snuff is based on evoking a sensation that is greater than the sum of the individual essences that go into making it up. Attempting to describe this in terms of the individual strands that one can detect in it's make-up, for me, misses the point entirely. This is high art, and aside from saying that it gives a very satisfying burn, that the scent is long lived but not too long lived, and that it has a moderately high nicotine level, I'm more comfortable describing it in terms of the emotions and memories it elicits.
A certain highly coveted Indian Snuff has been described as smelling "purple." I would characterize this in the same way, except the "purple" embodied in this is not the purple of incense and LSD induced visions, but the purple of royalty, mystery and passion. It is deep, dark, mysterious, infinitely complex, and voluptuous, but never overdone or ranky. In the words of a music critic describing the music of Brahms: "Latent heat beneath a formal exterior." It is the embodiment of eroticism; not merely animalistic sex, but the combination of spiritual longing and sensuous connection that make for a truly human erotic experience.
It is perfumed, but the dominant sensation is of the perfumes that the human body makes in the midst of exertion and attraction. Unlike my other favorite F&T snuffs, this is not earthy; it smells more like air, water and fire than the soil. Best taken in small quantities. But by all means, take it. High, high art.

This was the first snuff I ever tried and my last stock of genuine F&T purchased at The House of Bewlay in Piccadilly in about 1983 (after the Haymarket shop closed) contained a number of tins of Bordeaux. The last tin was only consumed a few years ago. The new Bordeaux is medium grind, medium brown in colour and very floral. The potpourri of scents listed as integral to this snuff (musk, violet, tonquin essence, lemon and may blossom) is very noticeable and is reminiscent of a boudoir or the perfume that clings to you after a passionate night of prurience. Unfortunately this snuff is, in my opinion, quite unlike the original Fribourg & Treyer Bordeaux, and it is far too perfumed for my taste. A closer version to the original Bordeaux in both taste and colour may be made using the proportional mixture that is described elsewhere.

My normal snuff is Rooster or WE Garrett - American Scotch Snuff. I recently "discovered" Fribourg & Treyer online and ordered 6 of their varieties, to see what the hubub about English snuff is about I have heard. Prior to this the only european snuff I had tried was Ozuna Cherry - or better known as the cough syrup snuff. I tell you all this just for the sake of background.
When I first opened my can of Bordeaux, I immediately noticed the rather strong perfume like smell. Hard to describe except to say similar to an old fashioned ladies fragrance, with strong overtones of flowers and musk. Put me in mind of a nice incense in a way. Nothing is more telling than trying, so, lets have a go at this.
My immediate impression was one of refinement. Compared to the blow your eyeballs out of the sockets hit of Rooster, there was almost no immediate kick at all to the Bordeaux. No burn that I noticed, nothing in the throat, no sneezing, no bad effects at all. For all the world it was if I had simply sniffed a nice old fashioned perfume in the ladies section of Dillards. Very pleasant - but not exactly what I had expected. I thought I had maybe done something wrong - so I immediately tried again - with the exact same effect.
After a few minutes of enjoying the scent, which does grow on you after a moment, I could feel a slight hint of Vitamin N. Not the strong immediate satisfaction of a snoot full of Rooster, but much more subtle and lingering. Seemed rather long lasting as it wore on - lasting well over an hour and a half.
I give this snuff 5 stars for 2 reasons. First it is so refined and well done that you simply have to appreciate it. It is truly a luxury snuff, and extremely delicate. Second with the lack of any adverse effects, I can imagine that the rank and file snuff users will fall in love with this. I will say however that compared to Rooster or Garrett - this has nowhere near the kick in terms of nicotine, although it is a bit stronger than the Ozuna cherry cough syrup snuff. It is sort of like comparing Everclear or White Lightning - to a fine California Merlot wine. Simply 2 different sorts of products. Merlot can have the same effect as the firewater - but - will require a substantial amount more of the product for the same effect. However it is infinitely more complex and refined, and even more enjoyable, unless you are in a rush.
In the end I still have my Rooster and Garrett. They are good for a morning boost, and perhaps a good smack in the afternoon. But honestly I can see myself using the Fribourg & Treyer more and more in between, because it is just so nice and even and refined.
In the end - I very much like my new found "discovery".

The flavour´s just excellent, no doubt about it. I especially like the combination of citrus and musk, that strikes me at first. Musk could be much wider spread in snuffs imo. The flavour unfolds very nicely and lingers there for quite some time, big plus, too. The only criticism is the burning, which I´m not too fond of. It settles soon, though. Some even like that, but I´m a bit annoyed by that. Well, if that´s the price to enjoy such a delicious snuff, then be it.

Wow. This is the most amazing snuff ever. Its an exquisite feast of aroma. Sweet and flowery, like the finest most decadent lokoumi you've ever tasted. Its powdered lust. Its sex in a tin. Its like having your brain knocked out by a brick wrapped with a violet. It's like being wrapped up in a blanket with a thousand purring kittens.
Its pure undadulterated happy.

F&T has yet to let me down with a snuff, and Bordeaux is no exception. It is a bit more moist than most snuffs, which makes it easy to take, but not too moist that it falls out of your nose after snuffing. The flavor is a spicy and floral combination, which is best described as a spicy potpourri. The flavor is quite strong, and lasts for a while after snuffing. This would be an excellent snuff for someone wanting to get into the world of old-fashioned floral snuffs.

Deep brown and immediately pungent. A little burn after the first pinch, followed by a medley of floral and spicy flavours that linger for nearly an hour. Identifying these aromas is difficult - there are so many! Roses, geraniums, sandlewood, musk, maybe citrus and something else (may be the Tonquin beans, but I don't known what they smell like). Not quite as good as the Dr J R Justice (which is more perfumed), but still very highly recommended. An intoxicating snuff.

If you've ever listened to Portishead's "Sour Times" then you've heard the musical version of this snuff. Sultry, sensual, sexy, and many other "s" words. The immediate flowery bouquet is not overpowering. It is inviting like a caress of the hand and a nuzzle of the neck. It mellows to that musky scent of a woman that we all know and love. The medium grind sits right in the nose where it can be appreciated most. Goes wonderfully with some Maker's Mark and a Romeo y Julieta Reserve Maduro.

I've seen the flavourings in this superb snuff listed as citrus, violet, geranium, may blossom, tonquin and musk and who am I to dispute that? The flavour is not only excellent but also long lasting and it develops nicely in the nose. In colour Bordeaux is a rich mid-brown, the grind is medium and the moisture level is also medium, making this an easy snuff to take.

A complex floral snuff, Bordeaux starts with a scent of musk and sweet flowers, which are balanced out by cedar and sandalwood. A long-lasting flavor (it lingers for hours after a big pinch) it is fresh feeling and satisfying.

The aroma is a cross between a gentleman's club and a French bordello. It is a decadent snuff, to be taken with Burgundy and cigars; perfumed, like turkish delight. Degas' "Absinthe drinkers " might well have had a pinch of F&T Bordeaux on the side. If snuff was illegal, this would be the one they banned first.
A taste I have enjoyed acquiring.

Great flavour, and as already pointed out, relies on Tonquin bean essence to give it the old fashioned signature aroma. No snuff collection is complete without some F&T in it and this is a classic that every snuffer should be aware of. You might not take it all day long but a great occasional pinch.

Continuing my journey with Fribourg & Treyer, am presently using Bordeaux in my day box now, and, enjoying it. Has a really good lingering scent, that, again is a bonus when working in the office. Gives a good tingle effect to the nose, which then gently fades.

A medium grind medium moisture snuff heavily flavored with geranium flowers, violets, tonquin and musk.It has a low to medium amount of nicotine,Tin aroma reminds me of soap and aftershave, very nice in the nose, but a little too much essence for all day use, tends to drip in the back of my throat if I use too much.
